Hey guys, I haven't been on the forum much lately due to my recent marriage. I also haven't played much lately due to the same marriage and due to the fact that a couple of the guys in the band I was in moved on in their musical pursuits. I was however invited out to a local jam session last night. I asked the guys if they wanted me to bring my acoustic or electric...and they said bring both and see who else shows up. So, I start off on acoustic but another guy came in with one as well, so I was asked to switch over to electric guitar about a half hour into the jam. I just brought my beat up Mexican Tele, a cord, and my Maz 18 Studio combo. I am, by no means, a "lead player"...but I can move around on scales enough to improvise my way through most songs without butchering them up too much...but let me get to my story.
I have an older Maz 18 that I had the EQ bypass mod done to. I also swapped a guy my regular cab to a studio cab along the way. Now to the fun part...I have never been a fan of the EQ bypass mode on the Maz. It has too much of a volume jump to make it a "channel switching amp".
I like to play my tele with my set of pedals into a mostly clean Maz 18. This is where the story turns. Since I didn't bring my pedalboard and was running straight in to the amp...I pulled out the EQ bypass pedal and engaged it. I spent the next 2 songs setting the Vol, Master Vol, and cut knobs on the amp to make it sound "like I like it". Hi input, Vol dimed, Master vol 1 o'clock, cut between noon and one, brake lite on 1 click.....let me tell you, I got enough "spank/twang" to pull off everything from Merle Haggard to SRV grit....all with volume and tone knobs on the guitar. I enjoyed playing and being able to color the tone without having to step on a pedal. It was an awakening for me.
In closing, if you don't think you like the eq bypass...spend some time with it...there is a whole other amp in the Maz 18 if you truly try to use it. I just found out the hard way...and enjoyed every minute of it.
