Hello! I've pretty much decided that I want a Maz 18, and for the past few days, have been reading the Z-Talk threads. The threads, or more correctly, you guys who post to them, are a great resource! I have a few questions that I've not seen addressed, so here they are:
1. With the Master turned all the way up, does the Maz 18 function like a non-master volume amp? In other words, does turning the Master all the way up take it out of the circuit?
2. Does the Maz 18 have a negative feedback loop?
3. Does the Cut control still function in the bypass mode?
4. I also have a few opinion-type questions: Does using the Volume and Master (and the guitar volume) allow for good tone at lower, "at home" volumes? If not, can a 5Y3 and/or EL 844s be used without degrading the overall tone quality?
Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the forum! As you noticed, there are a lot of great people and information here! Here's a couple of answers for you: 1) I believe that with the Master turned up all the way it functions as a non-master volume amp. 2) Maz is is a no negative feedback loop. 4) You can get good tone at home using the volume/MV and guitar volume. (p.s. - what do you consider home volume? I run my Delta 88 in my home ) The Maz 18 has been Doc's best selling amp for a reason - it is extremely versatile and handles clean to mean.

3) Yes, Cut still functions. Tone shaping in eq bypass comes from interaction of Volume and Master, seasoned with setting Cut.

Thanks for the info, Mike. My question about "home volume" was a bit wishy-washy, partly because it depends on whether my wife is watching TV! I hope I can pick up a Maz pretty soon.

^^^
I tend to push Cut up fairly high when using the bypass. I find the tone a little wooly/muffled otherwise. Of course, that reflects my playing style, guitars, etc. And I tend to use the MAZ when I want a fairly bright sounding platform.
If I have Cut up, I usually back Treble down so the non-bypassed tone is not too bright to my ears.

This ^ is good, Doctorice. Thanks.
So far, I've played a Maz for only a minute or two in a noisy guitar store, but was curious about the interactivity between the T-M-B and Cut. I expect the Maz to be a bit bright, especially with Teles. But brightness isn't a bad thing, although I suspect that once I get some experience, I'll be able to use it to a good advantage.

I run my tele's and strat's with treble never above 9:30/10.....no cut and still have ample bite.
Maz isn't like any amps you've owned im betting...the potatoe chip affect will happen soon enough.

Welcome to the Forum. I don't own a MAZ....yet.....just wanted to welcome you in and read the answers to your excellent questions. At home for quiet playing you could try using a Brake Lite from the Doc or a Swart Night Light.

Thanks for the responses! I'm set to try one later today, and if it works out, to hopefully work a fair deal with my trade-in. My fingers are crossed!
