Man I'm just not digging the sound of the Z speakers in the 4x10 cab. I want to love this cabinet but I never use it because I just can't stand the voicing of the stock speakers. Can anybody recommend a nice 10" speaker replacement for my 4x10? I'm wanting something that's got great low end that won't get flabby or fizzy, mild mids and smooth highs and big and full and thick. The stock Z speakers just sound too hard and middy like to me. I was considering eminence legends. I'm looking for something American voiced that has great headroom.

wouldnt these break up much earlier than the 70 watt Z speakers? Im looking for highest wattage as possible for little to no break up, and I use pedals for OD

Those Z10's need a good long pounding to loosen up a bit and get their true voice. You might keep that in mind before you swap out.... That said, you know what I'll say next. 4 Gold 10's are glorious in that cab! American with great headroom has EVM10L all over it. Be prepared to drop about $200 per speaker and a forklift to move it loaded with those discontinued legends!

would the celestion golds be high enough watt to handle the Dr Z EZG50? thats what Im using the 4x10 cabinet for and the stock Z speakers just dont do it for me

40 watts each. That's 160 total. They have plenty of headroom, but the Z10's have more. You might try 2 Golds with two Z 10's.. That's what Brent ( Dr Z former sales manager recommended) But I wanted full Gold flavor only!

My recommendation would not be the "higher than 4 Z's" headroom you are looking for. Not really sure what would be. 280 watts worth of Z speakers would take a heck of a pounding before they were broken in, even with the 50 watt EZG. One of the reasons I was never tempted to own a Z 4x10 cab (besides the weight). I'd love to have one loaded with 4 10A125's though.

I'm seriously considering Mark's suggestion of 2 golds with 2 Zs and see how that sounds.

I'm seriously considering Mark's suggestion of 2 golds with 2 Zs and see how that sounds. That was Brent's suggestion, I just passed in on. Seems like a great idea. AlNiCo flavor & chime with the Z10 punch to boot! I would put the Golds on top. But that's just me. I'm sure a lot of folks would/will suggest putting them in an X pattern.

My thinking is that you'd hear more AlNiCo magic with both Golds on top. And the ceramic would be more solid on the bottom. The X pattern would mix it up more. May be more effective if playing mostly big stages where you are a good distance from the amp/cab.
You can always try it both ways.
Congrats on the incoming Golds!!

There is someone currently selling a Z-28 and 4x10 cab with that exact speaker setup in the BS&T. You might ask him what he thinks based on your needs.

I also feel the same way about the Z10's with the EZG (for me of course). Just not American sounding anough. I've owned two EZG's. After selling both of them I bought an Avatar 4x10 with Golds and oval cutout to use with my Pure 64 amp and like it. I'd really like to try it with an EZG. I'd also like to try a 4x10 with Emi Rajun Cajun's, sort of how Matt Schofield runs his Two Rock amps (I know he used an EZG for a while). Too bad the Doc won't substitute the RC's like he allows with some of the 12" speakers.

so I just received my 2 10" golds in yesterday. installed them today in my Z 4x10. I have them mixed with the stock Z speakers. I installed them in an "X" pattern, so I have 2 golds and 2 Z's mixed. So far it sounds really good to my ears. it opened up the cabinet, made it not so hard sounding, not so middy sounding. like its finally breathing. I played only for about an hour and some change but the more I played the better the cabinet sounded. Im taking it out to my gig this friday to see how it sounds with the band. but so far im liking the sound much better with the golds mixed with the Z's than with just all stock Z speakers.

Congratulations. I'll bet that is a BIG sounding setup. The Golds also take a long time to break in but just keep sounding better as they do.

If you are using four ten inch speakers and pushing them with 50 watts they aren't really getting broken in. Break in time is determined by how far the cone is moving as much as the time spent. I have 'Z' 10's in my JAZ cabinet and I love them. I bought them used so I have no idea how they were used by the previous owner. I liked them from day one but they got smoother after a few gigs.
I use a variac to break my new speakers in at somewhere between 1/3 to 1/2 the speakers rated wattage. That's usually around 9 to 12 volts. Since the variac is running off mains voltage it's a constant 60hz.

I would like to try 2 golds mixed with 2 Z’s but man those golds are expensive! Would 2 Jensen C10R’s or P10R(-F) mixed with 2 Z’s work? The Jensens are really cheap!

What sound are you going for and what amp? Those are lower watt speakers. The p10r is super bright until it’s broken in. Neither c10r or p10r have a lot of bass. They can get flabby if pushed hard.

2 Weber 10F150s and 2 10A125's I have a Weber 10F150 in my Princeton Reverb. It's a wonderful American amp sound. I'd love to hear what they sound like in a pair or a quad.

I’m using an EZG-50. I think the 4x10 cab with stock speakers isn’t bad but for me a bit too harsh/dark sounding. I’m looking for a more sparkling/‘American’ sounding cab. Also more pedalfriendly (I’m using mad professor Simble, Twimble and the Friedman BE-OD for dirt. Two golds combined with 2 stock speakers in X pattern would be nice to try but I’d like to try speakers that cost less. Would the WGS G10/C be a good idea? I’m looking forward to your suggestions. Thanks!

I haven’t played the g10/c, so can’t comment. The p10r has a lot more sparkle to it than a c10r imo. I like it in a Princeton Reverb. Takes a while to break in. Wattage wise it’ll be fine in a 4x10 with a 50 watt amp. Conservative 15-20 watt speaker. Low headroom. I haven’t played doc’s 10” speakers often enough to have an opinion on how different they may sound. Sorry, should have played the 210 they have in stock at my local dealer today!

I just replaced the speakers in my Avatar 4x10 with 2-Eminence 1028K Alnicos and 2-WGS G10C. It sounds great so far. The 1028’s are used so they are broken in already but the WGS are new. I probably only have 4-5 hrs on them now. The WGS are slightly louder than the 1028’s but I still get that nice Alnico chime and top end. It really beefed up the sound of the cab, bass is much tighter.
I play through an EZG-50 and the mids make a huge difference. Boost the mids and it sounds huge and in your face. Not very Fendery, just tight focused and powerful. Roll the mids back and it sweetens up, gets the fender vibe, even a little chimey. I haven’t played it out yet. I’m playing bass in my current gig. I may have a chance to play out on 9/29 so I’ll update if that happens.

I'm playing a Dr. Z 4x10 with the stock Dr. Z ceramic speakers with my EZG-50. How can I expect the sound to change as these speakers break in? I'm wondering if I can expect them to get better or worse to my ear. Right now I'm not hearing the highs I expected. I haven't actually played a Fender Super Reverb but that's the sound I was going for and thought I'd get with this setup and I'm a little disappointed.

I’m not terribly familiar with Doc’s 10’s, but I always found them a bit darker. If you’re after more high’s, look to the eminence 1028k. I find them in the ballpark of the cts alnicos used in the late 60’s super reverbs. To be fair to Doc’s 10s, they remind me more of a oxford ceramic, which is a darker speaker compared to the cts alnico. Still a vintage sound and vintage correct for some super reverb amps.

I tried a brand new set of Eminence Legend 1028K's. I was initially very pleased with the highs but quickly realized they were distorting in the bass frequencies. They didn't seem to be able to handle the power and bass frequencies of the EZG-50.

Never really run the bass higher than 3, and I’d go done from there at higher volume. Barring those, a beefed up weber might do the trick, or for $$ the g10 gold definitely will. I find the weber darker than the gold fwiw.

I already have them and they are installedin the cabinet but I haven't had time to play it much yet. I will report back. I have a 12" Alnico Gold in a 1x12 Vox AC30 and my Dr. Z EZG-50 sounds great through that. If four 10" Alnico Gold's don't do it for me maybe it's safe to start considering maybe I'm not a 10" speaker kind of guy. Lol.

I'm assuming you have the removable panel on the back off in the "open" position?
