I'm building a relic fiesta red strat and I'm not sure which pickups I want to use. MJT guitars is building the body and doing all of the relic work. I've heard the lollar blackface pups sound really good. I'm looking for something that has that classic strat jangle but still has a good fat punchy tone. I play with overdrive a lot so I would like something that will sound great overdriven.

I have a set of the Lollar Blackface pickups and love them. You can't go wrong. Resale is pretty good on the Lollars in case they don't work out for you. Lindy Fralin is also a good maker.

Yeah jlow your building my guitar....love fiesta red w/rosewood neck.As so many have suggested lollars in a low output.(I) still don't rule out trying some fat 50,s though...so many out there.
Since you liked the nocasters so well something along that tonal range would be my aim.

I like the Lindy Fralin Vintage Hots (they're really not "hot" at all, but very low-wind vintage) but I suppose I cannot discourage you from trying the Lollars, either. The Fralins will be very glassy & jangly, but only the bridge pickup in that set (which is what Lindy overwinds a bit, calling it "hot") could be considered fat or punchy, as you are seeking.

I liked the Lollar Blackface, but like the Blondes even better! Smoother and sweeter with more quack in the in between settings. And wonderful with overdrive. Even better, is the Dirty Blonde set. Blondes in the neck and middle, a Special at the bridge. Another thing I found, I really liked the sound of the Lollar flat pole piece design, but the look just was not right in my mind. (Thanks for ruining that set for me maddog!!!!) I'd go for the flat for most balanced string to string tone, but vintage staggered if you're worried about the look and ok with the sound. I have a set of Callaham/Fralins that are really great. I'd choose the Lollar Dirty Blonde staggered next time though. I love the Fender Eric Johnson pickups too. They are not leaving my EJ Strats. So many great pickup makers today it makes it a conundrum to try to choose. Throbak is about to release Strat pickups as well. Good luck with your search & decisions!!!

I love the MJT stuff by the way. I just got a 50s style blonde body from him. It's awesome! Lightweight and super resonate. It rings like an acoustic unplugged, and the trem springs almost give a natural reverb. That's sounds crazy but its true. I'd like to find pickups to match.

I have a set of Klein S-7s that I like a lot. They are supposedly made like Eric Johnson's pickups, so vintagey neck/middle, and overwound bridge. Have you thought about wiring? There's lots you can do with Strat wiring. I'm a big fan of master volume, master tone, and a blender pot to bring in the neck/bridge tone. Lots of choices, that's for sure!

Our friend BW turned me on to Amalfitano, who hand winds PUs here in the DFW area. I now have his SPs in 3 Strats. Tone and output is very much like what you're lookin for Justin. Check em out!

I also recommend the tusq xl for the nut. Of course bone is tried and true but I'm really liking the tusq xl material. I use the trem a lot and she stays in tune.

I have 3 MJT builds..two Strats and one Tele. The Strats have Duncans with SSL-5's in the bridge position. Looks like a vintage pickup, sounds like a vintage pickup...just enough extra winding to give it some balls and body without being overly hot/dark or losing the bite.

Great minds think alike... Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Proboards That's sweet Jess. What pups did you go with? By default he uses Porter pickups. I could have chosen any other boutique for a small upcharge. I'm happy with them, I don't feel the need to change them. Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Proboards

Check out Dean Parks' April '04 YouTube. He plays a Strat equipped with Mike DeTemple's pickups into a Ghia.
Mike builds them from the middle out so you get almost exactly the same output from each pickup, and he builds a pick guard that also allows you to get the normal 5 Strat combinations. plus neck and bridge and all three.
It's worth a look at his website, and he's very helpful if you call and have questions.

I have Bareknuckle PG Blues in my 79' Silverburst Custom ,my R8 bought S/H has Wolfetone Dr Vintage and my Tele has Bareknuckle Mississippi Queen at the neck and Blackguard at the bridge. I would like to fit another set of the Dr Vintage or similar to my 335............ but I hate to say it but I have never had any intentions or thoughts of changing the pickups in my 82' Squire JV 62 . Always been happy that it sounds as it should. I have moved tone control from middle to bridge, fitted a baseplate to the bridge and fitted a treble bleed circuit. I was advised on the JV forum(21 Frets)that even though it had the "American pickups" sticker on it when I got it S/H,in 83', that the pickups were Japanese derivatives and that the body though designated a 62' was routed as per a 57'. The forum administrators theory was some of the very early ones were built from what ever parts they had available to fulfill the initial interest. Whatever it plays and sounds like a 62' strat should IMHO.

When I bought my Lollar blondes for my strat build, I wanted the Lollar black face. George from Acme Guitar works (they use to sell Lollar pickups) talked me out of them in favor of the Blondes. They are really remarkable pickups. Bright but not harsh, great quack. Classic strat pickups. I get complements all the time and have even had people buy them based on my tone. However, they are not high output and you are going to need to raise the gain on your overdrives to get the overdriven sound you may be looking for. 5 years later I still have the Blondes in but once in while I think about the blackface. My other two strats have Fralin blues specials in them and they really have a punch to them and are darker but the tone is not so special. The blondes are really outstanding pickups IMHO.

So I'm torn between the voodoo st60 and the lollar dirty blonde set. Someone help me out here. Well I'm a big fan of Peter's stuff, but one thing I haven't tried is his strat pups. I think you're splitting hairs at this point as I'm sure either set would be sufficient. Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Proboards

One of my Strats has Suhr ML (Mike Landau) standards. I went through a pile of pickups before I found those. They're vintage sounding but with a bit more output, not overwound but just sound a bit stronger, work well with overdrive.
