Hey fellas,
I recently got an Rx Jr 1x12 combo with Celestion greenback. I'm loving it!
I just wanted to state some opinions on my results from the amp so far, and perhaps answer some questions for those who are on the fence about buying a 2nd hand Rx Jr.
Opinions so far:
1) In regard to tones- The Rx Jr tone is (IMO) very crisp, bright and "Vox" like. It does have a fast dynamic response to pick attack, but it does not have the "chug" of the SRZ or Marshall/Mesa/Orange type amps.
2) In regard to volume- It's loud. With the Master Volume wide open and the gain about 1/2 way up (high input, boost engaged) it's nearly as loud as my 35-50 watt amps (Germino, Marshall, Dr. Z).
3) In regard to portability- It's easy to move around and extremely well built.
For those on the fence:
1) In regard to tones- The tones this amp produces are in a slightly narrower range than a MAZ 18, 38 or Antitode. It's cleans are excellent and quite "Beatles-ish" or perhaps cleaner R.E.M. as a touchstone. But I got it for gain, and I almost don't need anymore gain pedals. And I love pedals! I am down to the amp for rhythm (moderate crunch), Spaceman Aphelion (for leads) and a Heavy Electronics Descend (reverse boost, for cleans). It's a more raunchy, ratty, slightly looser crunch than my SRZ-65. It can be very raw and dynamic but if you roll the volume back or play with exacting precision, you can create huge swings in volume and tone that normally require pedals, just with your hands.
2) In regard to volume- The MV works very well. I think I actually prefer getting a bunch of the gain from the ef86 preamp (noon to cranked on the input volume and plugged into the high input) and adjusting the Master slightly below 1/2 way up. I like the mix of preamp and power tube distortion achieved this way over running the amp cleaner and adding or stacking pedals.
3) In regard to portability- I haven't had a chance to gig it yet, but it survived shipping and several weeks of rehearsals just fine.
Hope this helps anybody out there debating on the Rx Jr. It may or may not be the right amp for you and I'm still learning the nuances contained within it.
I also would like to hear what pedals you guys are hitting yours with and what, if any, speakers are working better for you guys. A speaker swap or two is likely next on the horizon for me.
Cheers!
