Shame on me. I've been playing several of my other Zs and haven't really touched the '28 in a long time. Decided to stick it on top of my 1x12 Creamback cab today. Wow, was it sounding good with a Nash Tele. Volume at noon, bass and treble both around 11, bass a little higher than treble. No attenuation That EF86 front end just inhales the guitar and any pedals.

Try it with a strat-style, too. I did recently and thought it was the best pairing yet!

That is always my grab n go set up for medium size gigs (with any of my 'lectrics). I haven't used the Gold since I bought the Creamback. I've been using my Maz 8 for the last two months but today I fired up my 28 & Creamback - dee lish.

You know Mike you have brought up something here that has me wondering? I've been useing the gold and Yes it sounds good but, I think for me at least the creamback has got to be my favorite speaker with any Z

My favorite part of your post Mike-no attenuation. To my ears Z's like to breathe and move air. They're very flexible and toneful volume wise and practical without squashing them or reining them in with a BL or AB. As for speaker choice w any amp it's all in the ears of the player. Some like the inefficiency of a greenback, some the compression of a Gold or the bark of a 12H30. To each his own. The '28 is a great base for anything you wanna play and so easy to find a good sound regardless of guitar choice. Glad you gave her some airtime.

In contrast, I did not like the Red Fang/28 pairing, but the RF is great with other amps, including the Ghia.

I put a 10" Gold in my combo recently, and it's even better than it was with a Ramrod.
Just like you guys said it would be.

I have three other wonderful amps (an EZG, a 65 Super Reverb, and a 60 Brown Concert) but the Z-28 might very well be the last amp standing if I had to narrow it down to one. Just about the perfect amp for me.

The down side of this is that the dirt pedals like to be hit a little harder to bring out their character, but I tend to play to the cleaner side and let the amp do the talking.

Re attenuation: Purely speculation on my part, but the Z-28 may be one of the amps that doesn't do so well with an attenuator in terms of how the amp feels and sounds. In contrast, I find the Z Wreck to be only slightly compromised with attenuation. (Which is good considering how loud the Wreck is.)
Maybe the '28 is a candidate for a master volume mod, if its design would accommodate.

"Maybe the '28 is a candidate for a master volume mod, if its design would accommodate." I think the Dr said it did not work well for some reason. Maybe he will chime in if we are really nice

nmz, I seem to recall the same - however, do not recall the exact reason ..... that said, I do not think I'd be inclined to be such a huge fan of the '28 if there was MV ..... I been likin' it just fine the way it is for the past several years cheers always, eh Joel

Played my '28 today for @ 30mins with four different guitars. I forgot how thick this amp is. Everything sounded good and reminded me why this was the GO TO amp for 5 years or so. I think she's getting the call this weekend for the room we're in. Gotta make sure the other guitarist is bringing his "louder" amp b/c the little Marshall 15W he has won't hang with the '28.

I spent most of this morning alone in my studio with my Heritage Golden Eagle, a Mogami cable and my 28 1x10 combo w/ Gold.
A very complete archtop jazz sound was there for me.
Amp vol noon, bass 10, treble 10
Guitar vol 5 tone 6
