Hey fellow Z's,
Here's the story, I came across some nice 13 ply plywood, grill cloth and accessories. I already have a 2x12 Maz 38NR combo. I am in the midst of turning it into a head and would also like to make a 1 x 12 open back cabinet.
Does anybody out there have plans for a good 1x12 cabinet? I would like it to be as absolutely small as possible and open back. I will be putting one of my Celestion Golds in it. I would just buy a 1x12, but I have all the materials to make one and I fancy woodworking as a little hobby of mine. (i've got all the necessary clamps and tools, including a dovetail jig)
I would love to make one just like the good doctor makes if possible, but this is not a must.

Not much to it. Start with the baffle size you want and build it to that. You could go with the dimensions the Doc uses for his 1x12 but if you want as small as possible, you may consider using the dimensions for Doc's 1x10. I built an extra baffle for my 1x10 and fit a 12" speaker in it just fine.

That's a good idea, going with the 10". You're right, I should probably just go for it, but I tend to get caught up in all the talk of which/what size cutout is best for the back...what type of baffle is best etc. I think I make it more difficult than it should be. I just don't want to build it and it sound like crap. So, one question and then I'll just go for it...how thick should the baffle be?

1/2 inch birch ply if you're going with a smaller size cab. As for the rear cutout space, if you want more sound outta the back make it wider, less, more narrow.

Good info there. It'll give you an idea of what goes into it. However, I would highly recommend NOT using Radio Shack speaker cable to connect the input jack to the speaker. I've done 'taste tests' using that stuff VS. good cable (i.e. PCNS Cables) and your tone will suffer with the cheap stuff. Just an FYI. Good luck!

Yeah there are a couple things I would have done differently, but overall, it gets you to 95% of what you need. I'm certain, for example, that I would not have made it so large. Different strokes...

Cool, thanks guys! Yeah, I'm gonna take some inches off of the final design...I'll try to post pics when it is finished. (Hopefully it won't be THAT long until that day comes. We shall see!)
