All this new Tele talk and CS Tele buying has me on a new quest.... I've made some decisions to slim down my gear the past few months. The thought of selling my first and now only Tele crossed my mind. I've been a Strat guy since the start. (Ducking from Mark N... ) But I really like the sound of this guitar, but have always thought I'd like to strip the thick plastic finish (poly) off and get it shot with a thin lacquer finish. AND I never liked the very uniform grain. AND, it's heavier than a real vintage tele than I'd like. Tele w/ poly body: ...A while back I put together a Tele with a neck & body from Musikraft and was very impressed with their quality. SO, I picked up a light weight, one piece, swamp ash body with grain that has a little more "character". Now, one might ask, markT, why don't you just sell that Tele and find one you like? Well....The only parts on this Tele that are original are the body & neck/tuners. Pickups, bridge, controls, pickguard, jack....heck even the case is non original. That was one reason I didn't want to sell it. Top quality parts, but resale took a hit. I took the body to my buddy Darrel Guinn, and authorized Fender, Gibson & Martin warranty repair center and Guinn's Guitars builder. He's going to butterscotch it for me. I'll replace all the parts and neck onto this body and see what happens. It may suck.....It may sound totally different. It may be wonderful! We shall see. Whichever, it WILL be fun! More details in a month or so......

Agreed...I really am not for all the poly candy coated guitar finish anymore...there something about these highwayone w/there satin finishes that just let the tone come out...I know there not highend guitars...but I just feel that there was something about that satin ash body.
I sure hope your project is a winner...cant wait to hear about.

Looking forward to project progress, Mark. If circumstances permit, every guitarist should have at least one Tele

I like the even parallel grain of the original body. I'd strip it an go nitro all over it. Heck maybe even all tung oil instead.

I've done a few partscasters. Always fun stuff. At this point, I have all the tools from stewmac to do my own fret leveling and dressing, as well as nut cutting and shaping. I scored a nice relic'd strat neck last year - which I believe was done by MJT. I won a body on ebay last week so I'm ready to get it completed.
A nice little mod I've gotten into here lately are the threaded steel neck inserts that allow you to use machine screws to attach the neck and the body. I first became aware of it in the Guitar Repair Guide from stewmac, and then noticed that my Crook was put together that way as well.
Anyhow, can't wait to see the finished product Mark!

If circumstances permit, every guitarist should have at least one Tele I agree. Eagerly waiting an update Mark... Me too Steve, but it will be several weeks out. I like the even parallel grain of the original body. I'd strip it an go nitro all over it. Heck maybe even all tung oil instead. Chris you just might be in luck!!! If all goes as I hope, it will be for sale soon! It's not Mark N you gotta duck from... *chucks a plate at you* its me! Lol[/quote] Ducking flying plates from unexpected throwers!!! Don't forget about Mark Jenny. He does killer work and can ever give you a very very slight closet classic relic... I did look at his site Pat. But gonna just keep it local. I know my guy does great work too. BTW....not gonna be reliced...... I'm gonna do that naturally.... Can't wait to see the "finish" to this story!!! Congrats Mark!!! lol....you forgot the drum roll and cymbal crash Mark!...hehehe Totally cool with doing whatever you want to your guitar, it is yours. BUT..........why is there not a Z holding that guitar up? Like this better? I've seen those Jess. Sounds like a great concept. I'll try the Leo approved screws into wood first. Good luck to you Mark.... Looks like a really fun project! Thanks brother! May be screwing up a perfectly good guitar, but I can always undo it and use the new body to start yet another Tele!

Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Proboards about those threaded steel inserts... are you doing that for stability of the neck alone or is there some type of tonal difference that youve noticed?

The threaded neck inserts are now a feature on all three of my Teles and my Jeff Beck Strat; the rock solid coNnection, and near infinite sustain are major benefits, as is the ability to break the guitar down, and pack it in a suitcase (don't you all do this all the time?)
However, you need to have a steady hand and clear conscience to drill out the timber for the inserts - and I would also advise gluing them in, rather than just relying on friction to hold them. But as I say, the return on a few minutes of nerve jangling uncertainty really reap a rich reward...

They do increase sustain and help create an overall stronger neck joint than wood screws because the machine screws have a much higher tensile strength. Plus you never have to worry about stripping the wood threads in the neck of you must remove it regularly. www.crookcustomguitars.com/2014/09/01/increase-sustain-with-guitar-neck-inserts/Sent from my Galaxy S4 using Proboards

Alrighty! Just got it back from my finish guy, luthier, Darrell Guinn. Looks like glass now! Thin nitro amber tint..... I'm thrilled! You never know exactly what the finish will look like. Time to start the conversion. ....

Is the new bridge pickup there for it? Eager to see your finished new tele and maybe even hear it in person in a few weeks. Conversion complete! And YES, Ellis 50's B is in it now. Picked up the finished body and the pickup came today. Nice timing. This whole thing was a big gamble. I had no idea how the new body would sound....or look like, for that matter. All I can say is I am thrilled at the results! The old body was ash and sounded great, I just wanted a little lighter weight, different grain patterns, and nitro instead of plastic (polyurethane) finish. This thing is over the top! Much more alive and twangy. It's as if a blanket has been lifted off. It's a little lighter. The grain has much more character, in my opinion. I had to do a lot more work than expected. I needed to do a '52 rout to allow the neck pickup leads to be long enough. Drill a couple more feed holes. Plus the rest of the hardware swap took longer, but went smoothly. The set up was the easiest I've ever done. Bolt and play!! I'll post some finished photo's at some point tomorrow. I've been wanting to do this since getting this Tele about 3 years ago. The only thing original on it now is the neck! And better than ever!! It was great before!!!
