I have been searching for the “perfect” pedalboard for some time. Something that matched my blonde Zs and would allow me to incorporate a true bypass looper without sacrificing access the pedals themselves “on-the-fly.” Suffice to say, I couldn’t find what I was looking for in the marketplace. So, I decided to build one myself...
The goals were to have a 30 x 15 board with a recessed true bypass looper up front in matching Z-style rough blond tolex. It took about a month of spare moments here and there, but here is a photo blow-by-blow of the build and results. I am pretty happy with the outcome.
Mapping out the rough-cuts on 3/4" baltic birch plywood
The frame is cut and assembled with Gorilla wood glue and my trusty nail gun.
The edges are rounded-over with an 1" edge router and the AC, input and output holes are drilled.
Dr. Z style rough blonde tolex is applied and the AC outlet and Neutrik jacks are installed. Note the front basin for the recessed looper to rest.
The top is cut for the cable grommets and looper recess, wrapped in 3M velcro, handles installed, and installed to the frame. Also installed some Z style chrome corners.
A pair of Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 Pluses are installed to handle the ten pedals in the looper, the looper, and the RMC wah (run in front of the looper).
And the finished product. Pedals installed, wired up, and loops labeled.

How much does the loaded board weigh?

Okay. I started typing and then I got the blue screen of death on my PC. I'll try again.
Wow (I was saying)! I'm not much of builder, so it's pretty cool seeing it come together. Nice!

Seriously nice work. It looks great. How much does the loaded board weigh? Thanks! My bathroom scale is broken, but I believe it is about 20 lbs. Definitely not light, but the handles make it pretty manageable. I could have saved a few lbs by using 1/2" Baltic Birch ply, but I wanted a more substantial feel.

Fantastic job, love it! How did you run both power supplies out the side? Thanks! I hardwired a recessed male AC outlet cup which is mounted on the side of the board to a Y AC splitter inside the board. Then I ran each PP2+ of its own female part of the Y cable.

Y'know what's funny - I was in the hardware store just yesterday perusing supplies for a much simpler pedalboard build. Much simpler...

Matt, If you have the time, I would love to see the underneath after you wired it all together. And, how many cables did you use?

Fist class job. Twenty pounds doesn't sound too heavy considering it's built quality. How do you transport it? Do you have a cover or carry case?

So far it has not left my house, so I haven't had to deal with transportation. I think I will look into gig bags, otherwise I could build a matching road case. BUT the weight may be prohibitive.

Matt, If you have the time, I would love to see the underneath after you wired it all together. And, how many cables did you use? Bill,
I don't have a underneath shot, although that can be arranged! Each loop requires a cable to and from the pedal (10 in-loop pedals = 20 cables). Plus the cables running from the input jack to and from the RMC Picture Wah to the input of the looper (I could never get used to having my wah in the looper), and one on the back end of the looper to the output jack. Thus, I believe there are 23 total cables (46 George L connectors with a lot of feet of cable).
I'll snap a picture of the wired-up final product when I get home tonight.

Matt! That is awesome! I too will be anxious to see the wired-up board.....Very cool...I've always wanted to build one of these for home/studio use....and then have a totally separate board for gigs.... I'm impressed, Brother!!! NICE!!!!
