I have seen video demo's with a Maz18jr w/reverb that are completely staturated straight into the amp. My Maz is pretty clean all the way up on the pre gain and even with the master past noon it is not much of a hard rock or lead amp. Any thoughts?
It works quite well with pedals but seeing video after video with some really good crunch it makes me wonder if I am getting everything out of it that I should. This is a 1X12 combo BTW.
thanks
Pete

What speaker is in it and, if you bought it used, are the recommended tubes from Doc still in it?

Mine gets pretty hairy if you use the tone bypass. I've found that my single coils don't get very crunchy but a Les Paul into the hi input with the volume dimed and the master at 1 to 3 o'clock is pretty crunchy. I wouldn't say it was saturated though... Maybe they're using hot pickups in the demo.

I have a Maz 18 NR and a Maz 38 verb and both give you a good hard rock crunch when you max the pre; you shouldn't be clean at those settings. With a pedal you can make these amps really smoke

Greetings,
I just picked up a new 1x12 Maz 18 with reverb with the stock G12H30 a couple of weeks ago and it can get pretty saturated by turning the volume up past 2:00. It sure loves pedals, OD, fuzz, distortion....all sound great!

As the MAZ 18 is the most popular Z, the gang here should have plenty of ideas to help you sort it out. I'll start by asking: Did you buy the amp new or used? Does it have the EQ bypass? Where are your tone knobs set? What preamp tubes are in there? For example, if you bought used, someone may have placed a lower gain tube somewhere in the preamp section so that the amp doesn't exhibit as much gain, i.e., the "clean headroom" approach. With Vol cranked and playing into the Hi input jack, my MAZ clearly is being pushed. My tube selection is per factory spec, which you can view on Dr Z's website here.

People talking about the EQ bypass, I can't use mine AT ALL, way to much background noise, and it sounds spikey, thrashy, and terrible. Maybe I have something wrong ? I tried the hi/low input switching also, and it was very noisy.

I just replaced my Drz 2X10 speakers with celestion G10 greenbacks. It dropped the volume a bit, but got very warm and breaks up sooner. I also recently installed JJ EL-844's as well. It tamed the volume back and gets REALLY crunchy now. I use a strat, tele, Les Paul and ES-339 with it. I find with the 'buckers that I gotta roll the volumes out a bit (on guitar) just to keep that nice crunch, otherwise its too saturated, and muddy. Also, I always run my tones at 10, all of em. The master volume at about 6-7 and the pre about 6-7 aswell. Cut knob is halfway. With the original spec EL-84 the amp is quite a bit louder then with the 844's. I use Genalex EL-84 when I have the chance to really nut the amp, oh my god the tone!!

These are the settings I usually use. If that's too loud, I click back on the brake-lite. (O'clock) V 5 T 12 M 10 B 9 C 9 MV 12
