Hi everybody! My name is Matteo ('Matt' is fine as well) and I'm writing from Italy. I recently joined the Z-world along with my beloved 2008 Stang Ray head, which is also my first Dr.Z amp ever. I got it used on a good deal with an italian guy who lives in Belgium. I told him I was very interested to the head, but since I needed money I first had to sell one of my guitars, a Gibson ES-339. The seller has been really kind to me, 'cause he waited almost 2 months till I sold my guitar, and then he sent me the amp. The cab in the avatar is a used Dr.Z 1x12. Its stock speaker was a Celestion g12h, but I loaded with an AlNiCo Weber Blue Dog. The 2x12 would have been way too expensive for me, so I got a Dr.Z 1x12 which BTW sounds huge. Here's a link to my SoundCloud with a couple of clips I recorded with both the speakers. Sorry for the quality. soundcloud.com/matteofogal/sets/dr-z-stang-ray-1x12-speaker-test

Welcome to the forum!
As I was reading your post...about having the G12H30....I was getting ready to respond that you should try another speaker. But then I read you have a Weber Blue dog. Good change. I think the G12H30 is a terrible speaker for the stangray.
The Weber is also less efficient, which allows you to turn the amp up more.

Thank you guys! I think the G12H30 is a terrible speaker for the stangray. The Weber is also less efficient, which allows you to turn the amp up more. Agree with you on the gh12, but it didn't sound so bad to me. I mean, like the definition you get with that kind of speakers, but the alnico weber is just great when I crank the Stang, it responds so well and the highs are smooth and not harsh like with the g12. Also, the g12 has 30w whereas the weber is a 50w, cause I wanted some extra headroom.. though with the les Paul I still get a wonderful crunch tone with the amp cranked.

WoW is all I can think after hearing you say the guy waited 2 months for you to sell you guitar so you could by the amp....That's really cool and really patient. I'm sure he didn't mind playing it a couple more months. Welcome to the Z forum bro and congrats on a sweet amp. I can't wait to try a Stangray myself !! Now I better go listen to you tracks....

Welcome to the Dr Z forum and amps. Both are exceptional. Congratulations on picking up a Stangray. My favorite speaker with the Ray is a 50w Alnico Bluedog. That speaker brings out the best in a Ray especially when cranking the amp (1:00 and then some on the volume control). My least fav speaker with the Ray is the G12h30. Great speaker but not with the Ray was my experience. I've not listened to ur clips but will get to them. Italy will be blessed with beautiful tones. Crank it up with your Les Paul, loud and proud.

That's the exact model I have. I wasn't sure whether to buy the 50 or the 30w. After asking Dr.Z on Facebook I went with the 50w. I'm really happy with it. Can't wait to use it live at the next gig!

Nice speaker demo clips Matteo. You've really tamed the G12h30's top end, well done. Still the Bluedog gets my vote for the better sounding speaker. It sounds so smooth, rich and full. Really digging the dirty strat sounds. Superb tone and playing. I've always thought the Ray thru a Bluedog alnico 50w was similar to an old silverface fender super reverb but with smoother highs and a bit more compression. Great Bere Prima di Bere song! Very cool slide playing man. I didn't understand a word (I'm limited to only english) but that didn't matter, great song!

Thank you Drew, though it's not me playing on that track, it's from a playlist of a friend of mine. I'll tell him!
