So I have a z best cab I run with a z maz jr or spitfire clone and just I love it. I swapped the speakers for scumbacks, BM-75-65w and BH-75-30w, and am even more pleased with it. There's one issue though, it's so loud! And we're not talking just on stage, we're talking back row of the room loud, sound guy asking me to turn down until I can barely even hear myself loud. The doc markets this as a "long throw" cab and I'm experiencing this for sure. I must assume this is due to the ported thiele design, yes?
Clearly I understand I may be better suited selling the z best and buying a different cab but in the interest of keeping it:
Can I do anything to lessen the long throw aspect of this wonderful cab? Maybe by putting some foam to somewhat block the bottom porting section?
Would this affect the voicing of the cab too much or do you think it might work?
Has anyone tried something like this with a z-best or any other thiele style cabs?
Any other suggestions for cutting down on the long throw aspect of this cabinet?
Thanks for your help z community.

Have you tried a Plexi shield? I have not but I'm not particularly wanting to carry one around with me if I don't have to.

I don't know the db rating on the scumbacks, but I put 96db Heritage greenbacks in mine. Much less volume.
Also: A Z-best can be rather directional....don't EVER point it at a sound guy. He'll tell you to turn down every time. Side wash if you can. Even a few degrees away from the soundboard will help.
I just started using a plexi shield....It will solve all your problems.

When I used to run a Marshall 4x12 it was so loud and directional that I eventually had to place it off to the side of the stage and point it across. Of course it was mic'd.
