I was doing some research on speaker cab wiring last night and came across this cat...and his overdrive. The X-1! Anyone ever heard of it? I hadn't. Now I have and have one on the way. I'm a sucker for those big caps and full size CTS pots in a pedal. They ALWAYS sound BIGGER. This was in his note back to me: " The X-1 is a special overdrive. You’re right! Things like those big 600 volt polystyrene and tin foil best quality caps and the full size CTS pots make a big difference! BTW A few days ago Eric Johnson tried the X-1 (Sound check before show in Boulder) and played it for a long time and said he really liked it. He was all smiles. And I hear he doesn’t like much… Anyway, the hardwood tuning thing is actually three strips of walnut that are glued to the inside of the enclosure to reduce the ringing of the aluminum… And the wood is used to anchor those big caps and actually improves the sound of the caps too. I know that sounds crazy… But it works!" www.mulderaudio.com/id27.html

Got the X-1 yesterday! Really great sounding unit. Like jammergreg said, it goes from overdrive to fuzz. It really does go from a smooth, thick, BIG overdrive with the gain from 0 to about 2/3's into a full out, mild fuzz from 2/3 on up. Really fat and I truly believe the full size pots and giant capacitors add to that.
As far as the walnut strips adding to the tone, who knows. I'm not taking them out to find out. I did tap on the pedal to hear a little microphonic ringing and this is a very touch sensitive device so I could see it making a small difference. I don't know that I would call it BS. Gary is not using that a a giant marketing ploy. Just an tidbit of info he thought he'd add. Also, that was an answer to a personal email where I specifically ask about the "walnut tuned enclosure".
I love the fact that there are very few parts and no chips inside. A very REAL, unique device.
Oh....and sounds great into the Therapy. With the amp set clean using the X-1 as the sole OD, or the amp set at mild breakup and the X-1 to send it into the stratosphere. Sounds great!
More to come ...,
