I have a maz18jr nr 1 x 12 combo with a g12h30. I keep reading about how great the celestion gold sounds and was wondering what is the difference between the two. I play rock with a variety of guitars and pickups. Is there a huge difference between the two, especially in overdriven sounds? I feel like the my maz has some harshness in the treble department on some settings. I usually tame it by setting my cut at about 9:00 and my treble at about 10:00 or 11:00. Would a speaker change smooth out the highs. Also what would a creamback sound like in the maz?

I just tried this experiment. I ended up liking the G12h30 more than the Gold. The impact and clarity was superior to the Gold. I can see where some would prefer the Gold for some types of music, but for the wide selection of Classic Rock that I play, the G12H is the ticket.

Gold rocks! I use to switch between acoustic and electric at some shows and it worked great. Played mostly rock/funk/country with cut never above 10 and the gold killed. Not sure about the creamback.

The Creamback would be cool to try. I'd like to try the H and M....anyone have first hand on these?

I have a blue that I use mostly. It is supposed to sound like a gold with less wattage handling. I love the blue, it has a great clarity and top end to it. It really cuts through the mix. It does not have that super tight percussive bottom end to it. You might want a ceramic speaker like a greenback for that. If you mix them, you have the best of both worlds!

Every time I think the G12H30 might be better than the gold in this or that, I always prove myself wrong....

I think it's hard to beat a Greenback for rock. That said, i recently pulled my Greenback out and put in my Gold and have been loving it. More volume, headroom, smoother tone, more low end, etc. in the Gold. But the Greenback certainly gives up perfect rock crunch and grit with the Jr.

The G12H30 is no slouch. The Gold costs twice as much and it's not twice as good. The Creamback I have not tried but if it's anything like the Greenback is a great choice for classic rock. No bad choices amongst them but the Gold has a special magic all it's own.
