After reading many threads on the Therapy I was on the phone with the folks at SoundPure a while back and asked if they had any in stock to come take a look at. They said they didn't at that time and I moved on to other things while checking in to read the glowing reviews every few days or so. Out of the blue I got a note from SoundPure yesterday that one had arrived, they had opened it up, and they said it sounded great....then asking if I wanted to stop by. Unfortunately I was tied up this weekend but after a few hours I decided "what the heck" and told them I would take it but to ship it since I'm not going to be able to get over there this week. They then offered to hand deliver it to my house today (Eddie Berman lives close by) and it arrived 2 hours ago. Kudos to the folks at SoundPure!
But now about the amp. It is the real deal and exactly has you all have described. I'm often a skeptic regarding master volumes because I find on a lot of amps you need to get both the volume and master up to get a great sound. This is not the case with the Therapy. It's easy to dial in whether you want to be clean, slight breakup, medium breakup, or high gain. Almost too easy I was finding. It was a "wow" moment. If I want to play Hey Joe I can dial that in quickly. If I want to get into 70/80s rock with a few knob twists I'm there in 10 seconds. It sounds very good without pedals so I've barely done any testing with any yet. I was a bit worried about the lack of reverb or a send/receive loop but it has a really nice sparkle and I can say it sounds really great the way it is. I tested with some reverb coming in via my pedal board and that sounds great also. Not sure if I will use it much though...
I then went on to the speaker/cab testing phase. I have quite a few choices that I've collected over the years and I wanted to see if I would end up where the Doc ended up. I tried the amp with the following speakers/cabs:
- EVM12L (this is my favorite across many of my amps)
- Mojotone BV-30 (kind of like a V30)
- G12-65
- Tone Tubby
- Ragin Cajuns (2x10)
- V30+G12-30H in a 2x12
- Alnico Gold
I kind of expected the EVM12L to be the winner since it's my favorite with so many amps I have but I have to say that it was fine on the cleans (with treble turned way down) but it was not as good when driven.
The winner for me? The Alnico Gold. It sounds great clean, slightly dirty and with good breakup. Anyway, I'm just getting started with the amp but you often know very quickly if an amp will work for you or not and if it's a keeper. Or, you fight for a month to get an am dialed in for your taste. (Usually a bad sign) This one worked great for me right out the gate and is definitely a keeper. More to come after I get more time with it. Hope this helps.
