Hey Guys,
This question has probally been asked 100 times and I have read alot of the older post but found myself more confused. Image that! I have a NR MAZ 38 Mine has the orignal tubes and I have been fine with the tone. I found a retube kit on The Tube Store site that I believe is same as the orignal so I was all set to order those.
Then I find the Eurotubes site with alot options including with Gold Pins for richer tone diffrent breakup options. I mostly play inside venues usally about 10:00 on the Master. I play mostly southern rock, pedals include Timmy for light dirt. I use either my Screamer or my Paisley for a lead boost.
So when you have re tubed did you try someting diffrent than the orignal options and how did you like them. Any suggestions based on my style and pedals I use?
Thanks Ray

From what I've seen, most knowledgeable tube guys will recommend that the "gold pin" option is just a sort of gimmick, not to waste your money on it. (With one exception: the gold-pin Tung Sol EF806, which is actually constructed as a better tube than its non-gold-pin brother.)
If you're wondering about using anything other than the "stock" tubes that came with your amp, then yeah for sure there's lots of good tube options that some people feel might be better than what Dr. Z puts in the amps in the factory. But there's good reasons for that--mostly the Doc can't be bothered with tracking down hundreds of rare, expensive tubes; he needs to have a large number of reliable tubes at his disposal, for the sake of consistency.
It's kind of like the tires on your car--what they put on when the build the car are pretty good, and if you keep using those each time around, well then you'll be in good shape. But if you're willing to experiment a little and look around for something that suits your taste "even better," you might be rewarded. And don't forget to read lots of stuff from Myles, the resident tube guru here on Z-talk.

If you like the sound of your amp, change the power tubes and the phase inverter (the 12AX next to them) leave the rest of the preamp tubes alone. They last a long, long time. Keep the old 12AX from the phase inverter for an emergency in case one of the other preamp tubes goes down.

Thanks guys for the response. Its a 20th Anniversary with original tubes. I think I am going to get the std re tube kit from Eurotubes and go ahead and replace them all.

If you do that, I recommend you mark the tubes you take out with a sharpie as to what position they were in when you removed them. That way just in case the amp does not sound the way you like with the retube you can get things back to what you liked. If it sounds great after the retube, you will have a marked spare in case a tube goes down in the future.

When I had my Maz 38 I tried different tubes than the stock ones. Ended up going with what Doc recommended. Sounded much better stock than anything I could do tube wise. I did upgrade to a NOS rectifier. Much more reliable than anything new I tried.
Mostly stay away from gold pin. That's for hi-fi. With only a few exceptions they are usually not any better than non gold pins.
Have fun.

Marc, That is a great idea!
Is below pretty much what the Doc recommends or get me close?
Dr Z Maz 38 Non-Reverb Standard Retube. Price: $100.50 Description: This kit includes a matched quad of the JJ EL84's for power, a JJ GZ34, two standard ECC83S's and one balanced ECC83S for the phase inverter in V3. Mike recommends a JJ gt #6 for power but since we have 30 different grades of the JJ EL84's and we know where the bias point is on these amps, just let us know in the comments section if you're looking for an early breakup, a moderate breakup or a later breakup for more headroom in which case we will choose the coolest grades we have available for the power tubes.

Experiment and take notes of what tube went in what position. Be safe and have fun.

I prefer tubes that are close to recommended spec. Moderate is what I would choose.
