.....and think "Maybe THAT is what I need," I go down and plug into my Z28 and after 5 minutes think to myself, "I can't believe I even mentally flirted with trading/replacing my Z."
I'm not rich; I'm a blue collared firefighter/paramedic. When I need or want something musical, I sell something else or trade. Last weekend I heard an amazing guitarist at a big outdoor local blues fest, with a strat, a few pedals and a SF Fender Super Reverb just KILL IT. Tone for days, just awesome. So then I start looking around Craigslist for a SFSR. Do some internet research, watch some videos, do some price analysis, etc. Sound familiar?:-) I mull over tone for a few days. Then I go play my Z28. And after minutes feel both happy and ashamed.
Anyone else have these demons?

Funny you should tell this story. Earlier this summer I heard a guy sounding great through a SFSR too! And I went down the same path.
For me it was a) the z28 sounds great, and b) a SFSR is just too frappin' heavy!

I love that you feel ashamed because I do too when I have allowed even the thought of selling or trading my Ghia cross my mind. It's like taking a bath to clean off the yucky feelings when you play through the Z....suddenly no other amp tempts me and I usually say WTF was I thinking !

Yep..... but I've stopped that now........ and here's why. We have a most BRILLIANT bluesman over here called Aynsley Lister who has the most soulful yet blistering tone I've ever heard - just wonderful. Last January I got to go on a master-class weekend with him and it was up close and personal: he was just a regular guy who played our guitars and amps and we got to play his stuff too. Anyway he plays through a Marshall 2x12 4120 combo (rare early 80s beast) and I thought " i have to get me one of those" WRONG! When I played through it, I sounded like me playing through a Marshall. However, when HE played through my Remedy, he sounded EPIC! Just like himself, but with that DrZ zing going on. He highly rates the Doc's amps, but found the upper-mid edge on the Remedy not to his liking, which is fair enough. The point being, it's not really the amp which gives these guys the tone - it's their FINGERS (and skill, and heart, and head and musicality etc., etc.) So, I now pick amps which I love and make me feel good about MY playing, however crap it may be, and then just make the most of it by trying to play better (for me those amps are the Therapy and the Z28). I never intend to play any other make of amp again, but reserve the right to own more Z amps

He's got two of them, and yes, they are like hen's teeth! They sound incredible though........... even when I played through one of them! But then again, so does my Therapy

Minor correction: that's a 2144 that Aynsley has... in fact, he's got 2 of 'em. And yeah, they're rare allright.
But I'd agree with the statement earlier that he's always gonna sound great through whatever he's playing. I always sound like "me" regardless of what I'm playing through, too (but that doesn't discourage me from playing the best stuff I can manage, though!).

I also think Aynsley has a Vibro King? WHatever Fender it is, he sounds almost the same through that as he does through his Marshalls - just quieter!

First got my Z-28 in 2006 ..... been a very strong relation ever since - including an unplanned separation and subsequent happy reunion There have been other amps - Dr Z product and non-Z product - that have caught my ears and eyes by surprise along the way. At this point in life, I do not have: the storage capabilities, sound-proofing, financial elasticity or guitar prowess to justify expanding my holdings based on my tone-lust. True Will I add another Dr Z amp to the fold? Yes. Will it replace my Z-28? No - it will be a complimentary piece of my tone pursuit. Will I need some more cabs and a few 'switcher' pedals? Yes. Would I consider running with a dual Z-28 set-up in combination with one of the following: Remedy, Rt 66, Antidote, Galaxie, Therapy, Ghia or Z-Wreck ? Time will tell ........ cheers always, eh Joel
