I took the Z28 2x10 combo to an open blues jam the other night, with my tele. In my basement, I run it at 1-12-1 with a tele, gives a nice rootsy overdrive when you hit the strings, LOVE IT! I generally hit it with a pedal for leads, so I brought my trusty old FD2. This was a decent sized bar, not a little hole, with a drummer, B-3, bass, harmonica/singer, another guitar(playing a Marshall 18 watt 1x12). I couldnt get anywhere NEAR 1-12-1 volume wise. Was literally burying the bass player! At that setting. I wound up at 8:30 or 9-12-3, which was as loud as a) I needed to be and b) could be. No it wasn't miked, and no I don't have a Brake Lite. So, is the Z28 just too much amp for most stages these days? This is fine with me, as I use pedals too, but hell, who'd have thunk 22 watts is just too much! I was talking to a local pro who just played a big blues festival, with his 50 watt Marshall half stack. Huge outdoor gig, thousand + crowd. He said he had the volume at @2/10(dunno if he meant on the amp, or cranked amp but 2 on the Les Paul volume). Either way, and his amp was miked.
I have been flirting with getting a Brake Lite, but honestly, I can't see it taking my volume from 1 to 9 oclock without significantly changing the sound. And inefficient replacement speakers(Greenbacks, as opposed to my Z 10's) WILL change the sound. Anyhow, seriously. Where do you set your amp volume/knobs for clubs of say 100+ with a 4 piece?

Between 9-11 depending on the room. Add or subtract bass and treble as needed. Felt bad when MarkT came to see us bc my '28 was at 8:30-8:45 on the volume. Seriously low volume.

1) With archtops for big band or small group, V=noon, T=9 B=9, guitar volume between 3 and 5, tone about 3.
2) With 336 or Guild Bluesbird for variety jobs, V=9 or 10, T=1 B=1, guitar volume about 6, tone about 7.
With both of these I'll use a MXR Microamp for clean boost.

If volume is an issue I will often run 9-9-9. If I need more I usually start with the tone controls they being so interactive. I bring those up to taste and if it breaks up too much I'll do the opposite. Leaving the tone controls at 9 then bringing up the volume.
I am getting a little better at just using my GV but I always have a boost and some sort of drive. The 28' is so amazingly good with pedals I usually lean on those at gigs. But starting with either 8-9-9 or 9-9-9 is a great jumping off point.

8:30 to 9-12-3 IS a good sounding setting with a tele. Doesn't move as much air or crunch like 1-12-1 or 3-3-3, but it does sound darn good.
Its funny. My amp prior to the Z28 was a amazing 1970 SF Twin Reverb, blackfaced, with all NOS tubes. It was glorious sounding clean, but it wanted to be 3.5-4 on the volume knob to sound its best. I couldn't play it ANYWHERE over 2-2.5, ever, so I downsized, from 85-100 watts and 2x12's to 22 watts and 2x10's, and I STILL cant crank it. Regardless, its a lifer of an amp. I'll just have to buy a smaller one I CAN crank, like a MAZ8 or a 5E3 or an Allen next, but that can wait til the pedalboard is completely completed.

I don't think I've used the same settings at a gig with this amp. With only 3 knobs it's really quick and easy to dial in the amp to any room. Volume will depend on my tone knobs. I'll run it up to noon or 1 when I've got the bass below noon and the treble at noon-1. But if I push the treble up to 2 or so and run the bass at noon or slightly above, I'll pull the volume back to 9-10. This of course all depends on the room I'm in. It's kinda hard for me to pinpoint exact settings bc they are ever changing. The good news is that I don't get bored with the amp bc there is so much flexability in those 3 knobs. I don't think you can go wrong with any setting! It's idiot proof haha! That's great news for me!

Nmz makes a point people who don't play a 28 (or its 3-knob brethren) wouldn't get: the tone controls can be significant determinants of volume.
This was a real change, in a conceptual sense, for me when I got my Z28 four years ago.

Been a while since I played-out with the Z-28 and 210 cab .... iirc, settings were approx: V @9:00; B @ 11:00; T @ 1:00 ..... guitar volume/tone to taste And, in the past I have used a PRS SC-245 with Z-28 and either 112 or 210 cab .... prefered settings for me were: 11-2-2 ..... and mebbe a touch of Flying Dragon for flavor Indeed, as those tone controls roll over to the right, the sound and flavor gets just right ..... imho cheers always, eh Joel
