So ... I caved into pressure (self-inflicted) and got some NOS tubes from Mike KCA ... ;D Mullard GZ34 - tightened the amp up even more compared to the Valvo and Phillips 5AR4 rectos I had in there before and gave it more of what was already there. The plate voltage seems higher now as well (I don't have a voltage regulator so I can't be for sure) but Weber BR measured 455V on the plate, with the other rectos it always seemed to be around 445V (+/- 5V depending on the wall voltage). Mullard EF86 - I like this one the best when compared to Dario Miniwatt and GEC ones. They are all very close and the difference is subtle but definitely noticeable. The Mullard seems more "open" and "airy", the amp seems a bit less stiff, woody and compressed. Mazda 12AX7 (balanced PI) - I like this one the best when compared to stock Sovtek 12AX7LPS, GT 12AX7M and the NOS RCA I had in there prior. It has more gain and seems to push the output section a bit harder which does not result in more obvious "gain" but just adds another level of "richness" with more sustain. I also put back a pair of Chinese KT66, I had JJ's in there and I keep going back and forth between the two ... this week I like the Chinese better ... I just love how Route 66 responds to tube changes, it really allows you to find the right combination for your sound. Cheers, iggs.

Isn't great when that stuff you try actually works for you? Have fun...

Interesting about the NOS PI. I might have to find myself a matched one to try.

On the rectifier .... it is not the plate voltage difference that indicates anything it is the voltage drop under load that is the big factor here and NOS pieces have the proper voltage drop at the proper current spec which is not the case with new production rectifiers.
