I'm not a twang guy at all, really--when I pick up a Tele it's way more Keef than Brad. What I like about the Therapy so far is how spongy the front end feels--it's a very forgiving amp. I'm a bit wary on the treble front, as I say--but the upper mids are just killer, and the low mids and bass are ballsy in the extreme. Even at low-ish volumes you really feel this amp. I'll put in a couple of hours with it today and see if I can't find a straight-in Strat tone that works for me. What I get from the EZG are huge, ringing SRV-ish cleans, and rich, singing sustain with OD/distortion/fuzz--the EZG's front end reacts beautifully to just about any pedal. The Therapy is kind of what you'd get if you mated the Remedy and the Z-28; I'm digging the Z-28 parts, and still a bit cautious about the Remedy parts. That said, these are very early impressions--I'm sure the Therapy has a few tricks up its sleeve, yet.

And hey--I don't judge any of my other Z's by playing them straight in. So for me, the question is whether I can find sounds in the Therapy I like as well as or better than the tones I get from my other amps, whether straight in or with pedals. So far, LaWonda plus OD is a home run.

Don't get me wrong this is totally on my list. Just need to see where and when I can fit it in!
From the reports it is reminding me of the vintage channel on the Antidote with a little less top end chime. I really loved the Antidote and wish it fit what I do, don't fit in those pants anymore:). The Therapy sounds like its little brother minus the modern channel but a MV. Would that be a close comparison?

never played a "dote, so I have no opinion on this comparison.

I'm a bit wary on the treble front, Wow, my personal observation is the Therapy does a Great KEEF tone, it nailed "Jumpin Jack Flash" and " Brown Sugar". In an amp design like this the speaker dictates the upper end bandwidth to the largest degree. Have you tied the amp with an open back V-30?

Yeah--it's a Keef machine, for sure--just haven't got it dialed in yet, I don't think. Like I say, Doc, these are very early impressions--and my other Zs are so great any comparison is gonna be tough. I can't overstate my enthusiasm for the EZG, the Z-28 or the Maz 18 studio--all killer in their own ways, and hella tough competition for any new amp. Haven't tried the Therapy with a V-30 yet, no--been using a Gold in an open-back Z-cab.

So, an update: got to spend about an hour with the Therapy just now, and the discovery I made is probably the obvious one. Where this amp really shines with single coils is with the master volume at about noon or above: at that point the amp opens up beautifully and the straight-in tones are remarkable--even the Dave Baker demo really doesn't do them justice, good as it is. Total Keef with a Tele, and huge, majestic dirty blues/rock tones with a Strat. Only trouble is--at 35 watts it's REALLY LOUD. I ran it through a Brakelite SA on two clicks, though, and managed not to do permanent brain damage (more. Additional). So hell yes it's a keeper--and hell yes the straight-in tones are pretty spectacular--but it's also a terrific pedal platform if that's your bag. Curious about the Vin 30 now, though.

erm, why don't you just turn down the MV?

It kills the sustain and reduces the harmonic content to some extent, Pete. Okay for at-home noodling, but for that you want clean settings and pedals, anyway--or at least I do. Cranking the MV a bit really lets the amp breathe--it's glorious at about 1:00!

What I'm saying is that I'd totally gig the Therapy with just a tuner, boost and delay at this point--although for small venues a BL would probably be useful if you want to open things up a bit.

This is true of the relationship between the V and MV on the Maz 18, too, in my experience. If you want to cook those power tubes, you've got to open up the V a bit. The beauty of the Therapy is that you can get 6L6 power tube distortion at (relatively) low volume (even lower with a BL)--very thick, very rich, tons of harmonic goodness, ringing sustain. Awesome!

It's really interesting how we all hear things differently, and are looking for different things I guess. I feel this MV is a million miles away for the Maz18's MV, in that with the Maz, the MV and V were very interactive (one basically runs the Per amp, the other the Power amp) whereas the Therapy is a Post Phase Inverter MV (same as the Remedy) which does a much more balanced job - IMHO of course. Do you not find the BL has the same effect on the harmonics? (not that I've noticed any "effect" using the MV - and that could well be my ears not detecting what you can clearly hear!) Of course, I fully understand the "clean pedal platform" requirement, and that's where we come at this amp from completely different angles, as I'm very much looking for hard amp push, GV balance and a clean boost for solos. It's great to see / hear how others use these wonderful tools

Keith A: Nope--it doesn't defeat the MV--there's plenty of space in the MV from about 11:00, where the amp really opens up, to what it does with the MV dimed. With the MV at 9:00, though, and maybe this is unique to me somehow, the amp doesn't have the same sustain and ringing harmonics as when you dial up the MV a couple of notches. It's pretty interactive--it's not quite like the V is all gain and the MV is all loudness. I found it best to use them in tandem to get what I wanted going straight in.
Pete: the BL on 1 or 2 clicks doesn't add audible squish or dirt--at least I don't hear it if it does. On 3 clicks there's some degradation of tone, on 4 it's very evident. Not saying you have to have a BL to use the Therapy--only that it gets you closer to small-stage volume with the amp opened up--what a BL is supposed to do. I use a BL with my Maz 18 all the time, pretty much--pedals, too. So why not with the Therapy? I get that the MVs aren't exactly the same, but they seem pretty similar in terms of the way they interact.

Events and circumstances have caused me to get very little play time on my Therapy so far. One "trick" that worked for me with a Strat was to turn the tone knobs all the way down, thereby cutting off sound. I then brought just the mid up, with V and Master up, of course. Found a good starting tone then seasoned with B and T. I was after a clean sound, so V was somewhere like 10:30, maybe 11. Master @ noon, iirc. Also, this was done with guitar volume around 7, so there was plenty of signal left to hit the amp harder for a gainier sound.

Liking mine through a Creamback with the Master all the way up and turning up the volume just a little. Mid & treble around 11, bass @ 1:00 This is also how I ran my Maz 18 when I had it. Lovin my Therapy! Playing my 79 Country Gent with Filtertrons, My Strat with singles sounds good also.

I guess I'll find out myself when the Therapy shows up at the dealer My fear is that the Therapy is turning out to be not the amp I'm expecting. I'm not really concerned about single coils since, in the long term, I may never plug those into the Therapy. I'm more concerned with the meaner side of the amp or the maxxed out drive sounds with humbuckers (no pedals). That the part I really haven't seen addressed yet. The vibe I'm hoping for (and I really hope is in that box when it shows up) is similar to that in the attached video (1:26 ti 1:48). Does the Therapy get into this territory when pushed with no pedals with humbuckers?

Does the Therapy get into this territory when pushed with no pedals with humbuckers? Yes it does IMHO - look back at what Jon (EZGbiscuit) says about his LaWonda R8 and the Therapy. This is a smooth-OD rock machine for sure - I get tones like that using my P90 loaded LPS with the GT rolled back a little (as best as I can compare using YouTube - you have to feel this amp when playing it to really appreciate the dynamics) I think this particular thread is all about how to use the Therapy as a clean pedal platform - but that is not its only trick by any means, and indeed it wasn't specifically designed for that - it has a fair amount of smooth, rich gain when that V knob gets above noon, and up around 3, it's cooking!

The "T" does provide that rich smooth cream on top OD sound . As stated, the V at around 1-3 cooks some nice harmonics. very similar to them sounds on the video.Wish I could noodle like that I have heard that nice thickness you hear on this video come out of the "T". To add another flavor just add a clean boost (EP boost here) and it pushes that singing even further. The MV is very flex and dynamic. I do hear a bit of what EZG biscuit is talking about regarding the MV at 9 vs 1 O'Clock. I did try a BL on it last night and what I found was that with the MV around noon to 1 and V to taste I could then manipulate an a between sound/flavor with a click of the BL. To me it just added further sounscape and possibilities. I am happy with the MV either way but just noticed that the field I gain with the MV at 12-1 O'Clock could be maintained with a click or 2 of the BL. Bringing it back to 9 O'clock narrowed the field a bit or presented another voice and at times that could be desired. The way I see it, not only does it play well by itself or with a booster but plays well with a BL as well. I guess something to consider if front house asks you to turn down a bit but you want to maintain that heavenly tone you just dialed in. From where I stand this just gave the "T" another A+. Very happy with this amp and just Like MarkT and Pete I am a very happy camper. Thanks DR Z.

Got to say, the more time I spend with this throaty beast the better I like it. I know you guys love it straight in and I get that, but it is freakin' SUPERB with a Strat and a good medium gain OD pedal--the mids on this thing are like velvet dipped in 20-year-old scotch. With a Jetter GS124? Fuggeddaboudit. I wasn't sure at first, but it's definitely a keeper--now I've got to make a decision about the Z-28!
