I don't know a ton about how the different speaker parts effect tone and was hoping that ya'll smart ones would share with us for 'posterity sake' of course. Voice coil, dust cover, magnet size ect....what the heck do they do for tone?
thanks all

The size of the magnet effects bass and breakup....and how much it does or does not flub (bass). Greenbacks and blues have lighter magnets. (greenback = 35oz.) They are known for less bass.
The G12H30 and V30 have big 50oz magnets and are known for much more bass...and sturdier bass. It's THERE in the V30...but it's overshadowed by the upper mid spike in tone.
A big magnet can yank the voice coil back better and faster than a small magnet. (at higher volumes.) Ignoring the power handling of the voice coil.....all speakers when pushed to a certain point, will have trouble with the cone moving back and forth. The smaller the magnet, the earlier it will happen. It starts operating out of specs. This is basically 'breakup'.
The size of the dustcover can curb the fizzy tone of an amp. The larger, the more diffusion.

I'm not entirely sure where I've accumulated this info, but it's most likely from various communications from Big Tony at Eminence. Anyways, here's some info for fine-tuning speaker tone:
Magnet: Smaller = less low end, more highs and "vintage"-y sounding (more "mids" focus) Larger = more low end, crisper high-end (more "scooped")
Voice coil: Smaller = less low end, more highs and "vintage"-y sounding; generally less power handling Larger = more low end, less top-end extension; generally more power handling ...also... Polyamide - brighter, higher power handling Nomex - in-between Paper - warmer, less power handling
Dust cap: Smaller/lighter = more extended highs Bigger = dampened highs ...also... Aluminum - more significant effect than paper Paper - adds peaks & extended highs Cloth (zurette, screen) - neutral Felt - warmer, smoother, mellow upper-mids & highs
Qts: Lower = better for closed-back cabs Higher = better for open-back cabs & combos

The good Doc told me that the biggest diff on the modern speakers is the paper on the cones. It's taken them some time to get close to the formulations of the classic years.

I just wanted to say thanks again for all this info...I've got this pulled up side by side with the speaker company info and it really helps to interpret it .
