Hi there! Recently I took a bit of a drive to the only Z dealer in the state. I knew I wanted to try the Maz 18 NR, but they only had the combo. I usually use a Gibson Firebird while I'm playing, and luckily they had one in stock there. I plugged in and was blown away! I love the tone of the amp with the mini humbuckers. So clean and beautiful, the drive is great, and WOW is it loud for such a little amp. I could see it being boosted into some full on distortion pretty easily with the right pedals as well. (I mostly play pop/rock right now, so I like some gain) Needless to say, I'm moving on from Orange to Dr. Z. It'll be way better in the studio than the Rockerverb, and I'll be able to get it to better volumes on stage. (With the Orange I can usually only get the volume to about 10 o'clock.) I have my eyes on a head/2x12 cab combo, and I should be able to order it soon! I also just wanted to say that I saw another post with this in it, but what got me into Dr. Z amps, and even what led me to hear about them is a band I've loved since their first album called Run Kid Run. From what I saw on that post, they use the Maz 38s, but the venues I play would be able to use the Maz 18 just fine. One more question. From what I noticed in the store, it stays clean for quite a while, and gets loud while doing it... but will it be able to stay clean at stage volumes? Anyways, I'm stoked to be a part of the forum, and I'll put some pictures up whenever I may be able to get that amp in my hands!

Welcome to the board! You are getting a great live amp. It really excels in the live environment. It should fit your needs nicely. Do not be afraid to use extreme settings with it. If you have not dig through the threads. So much great info on the Maz.

Recommend me picking it up with the amp? Or sometihng that'd mainly be of use in the studio?

Welcome to the Forum! A lot of great people and information here. I'm sure others will chip in but a brakelight is good if you are going to play smaller venues.

Usually I don't play the HUGE venues, but I play small-medium venues. The venue I play the most has a max capacity a the main stage around... 700-1000 or something like that. So I'd probably be fine without the brake light.

Awesome! That's great! Yeah, the others are alright. Sometimes we get off track at practice, but I'm pretty sure it happens to everyone every once in a while. Everyones comments are making me even more excited to get a hold of it.

You do not always have to use it but tight venues it really helps.

Welcome !! I used a Maz18 head and a Z 1x12 to gig with for years - plenty of power and headroom , all depends on how you dial it in.

I have a 1x12 reverb combo (as well as an extension 1x12 convertible cab and jr reverb head). I have a brakelight installed in the back of the combo...
I love the brakelight! I typically run the amp at between 1-3 on both volume and master so being able to dial it back a click or 2 can really help keep me in the sweet spot!

That sounds like it'd be a good way to use it... Have you noticed if it kills your tubes at all? I know there's a lot of speculation around the internet about attenuators, but no one seems to have much bad to say about the brakelight.

Yeah, the Maz can kick some serious butt in live situations! Everyone seems to say the same thing, so that makes me feel very reassured. I had a guy come check out the Rockerverb today, and he loved it. I'm kinda sad to see it go, but he'll probably be back tomorrow or the next day to buy it. Still can't wait for the Z.

Zach, when I joined Z talk, I was in the same position as you...had a little bit of time to find an amp....Didn't know much about em other than the fact I had tried a Maz Jr in the store and that's what prompted me to sell my Twin and a guitar to get the Z...found my Z used here on the forum and have never looked back! I have a Maz Jr 112 NR and it's been the best damn amp I have ever had! I have had it for almost 5 years now...that's a record in my gear world I usually kept amps for 6 months or so...always thought "this is the one" and then I would see something else or get GAS. That hasn't happened for me other than the desire for more of the Doc's great creations. You'll have a ball with it. If you go new, give the speaker some time to break in. Mike (doctorice) has a chart full of settings that you can dial in. Versatile, mean, aggressive, warm...all those can easily describe this package. Just recently, after reading a current thread on cranking the Maz, I thought I would try it...open up the Master volume and then dial in the volume to taste...HOLY SHITZLE STICKS!!! Man, what a revelation. I have had that amp this long and never even went to that territory til now! Wicked fun! Anyway, this is just a ramble so I will get back to work...

I gig almost weekly and use the MAZ attenuated a click or two at most gigs. I have Mullard RI EL-84's installed and have used them for 11 months so far and they seem to still be working perfectly.

It's good to know I'm not the only one starting out this way. Haha. Seriously addictive little amps. Once you try one out, it seems you have to have more. When I first bought my Orange I never pictured getting rid of it, and now I'm stoked for the Maz to be taking its place. That's great to hear though. I hope I won't have GAS for any other amps after this. I can't picture that happening though. Pedals will always be a never ending pursuit though. =P I think I may have come across that list. I'll have to try the settings out when I get the amp. I actually was reading a little bit of that thread as well. I'm definitely going to give that a try when I get it! It's great to be among like minded people!

Well, I called Humbucker Music today, and ordered this guy. So stoked. I love these colors. After talking to Brian, he said he sent off the order today, and they should get it in 4-6 weeks and then ship it off to me. He gave me the option of having a V30 and a G12 or a Creamback and a G12, so I opted for the Creamback. I'll be selling the Orange potentially tomorrow now, so for upcoming gigs, I'll be using my Vox Cabinet and Micro Terror until the Z gets here. I can't wait! I'll be getting road cases for the head and cab so they won't get damaged... Any leads on a live in case for the cab? I've found one for the head, but have only found lift off for the cab so far. Just in case... I totally don't own this image... Obviously.

I'll bet you're gonna love it. My experience was a lot like Mark's - didn't know much about Zs, was looking for a BFDR at the time and heard something about the MAZ Jr, a few days on Z-Talk and I had the hook in my mouth. About a week later I sniped a MAZ head off eBay...and haven't looked back. I've used it with a single Hellatone 60 (very good) and a Z 2x10 (REALLY good!). YMMV but it's hard to go wrong with a MAZ Jr. Guess that's why it's Doc's biggest seller.
Have fun with it!

Hey Zach, welcome to the forum!
The Maz Jr was my first Z, great amp!
That's a strikingly good colour combo, wow. Congrats!

Zach, welcome and congrats on a great looking rig. Those colors are awesome. You've chosen well. My Maz jr has been with me over ten years and I would never consider letting it go. Sometimes I wish I did as you and bought a head/cab instead of a combo so I could team it with other bottoms more easily. But I did team the 2x10 combo with another 2x10 bottom at an outdoor gig this summer and did it sing. You are going to have some fun.
