A little pricey at $249, but packs a ton of features into a board-friendly box. Excellent, warm tape sim, sits perfectly behind your playing. Pedal includes tap tempo and preset modes (up to three presets without the need to purchase an additional "favorite" pedal a la Strymon), also has output level control (again unlike the Strymon el Cap), tape age selector toggle (new, vintage or old), modulation switch (none, little, lots), etc. Also has internal headroom adjustment, very handy if you run fuzzes or distortion into your delay pedal as I do. Downside: Mono out only--not an issue for me since I have no plans to run a stereo rig (who wants to haul TWO amps/cabs to a gig?). Also does not have selectable patterns, but can do dotted eighths by using tap tempo: again, not a feature I need, so not an issue for me. For my needs maybe my favorite delay so far: has succeeded in kicking my Belle Epoch off the big board.

Sounds cool - Delay is one of my favorite effects.
I have the El Cap on my main board as well as an old DM-3 on my mini-board, but am always looking around for cool , new delays!

I had an el Cap and liked it a lot, but the lack of a preset feature got to be an issue. The Empress can store up to three presets, with write protect, so you can cycle through your long, medium and slap delays without twiddling knobs. Presets are super easy to write and store. The el Cap also has a bit of a volume drop when engaged--at least mine did--which wasn't a big deal as I always had it on, pretty much, but I could see how it might drive some folks a little crazy. The Empress's output control is very useful.

I haven't noticed the volume drop with my rig (gonna have to give it another, more critical listen).
I did buy the favorite switch and have it set to my slapback setting. when off I tap a longer setting in...
With that said, three presets and an output control would be cool!

I've been eye-balling the Vintage Modified SD for a while. I've been pretty happy with the DD-20 but I'd still like to try the VMSD, and now the Tape Delay.
