In the latest issue of Vintage Guitar there is an interesting interview with Terry Kilgore where he states that you would be amazed at how good an amp will sound when your tubes are 15 to 20 mA apart. Now I do not know that I would like that sound as I like the way my amp sound with matched sets. I just found it interesting that this was mentioned. Terry seems to think that if you use matched sets of tubes you get a sterile sound...I have to disagree based on what I hear with Groove Tubes and matched sets from KCA NOS Tubes.
Has anyone here ever tried running tubes that were 15 to 20mA apart? Perhaps Myles can chime in on this type of issue. I actually did a bias check on my 6545 last night and my NOS 6CA7 tubes are sitting at 35mA & 30 mA. Amp sounds wonderful to me...but then it is a Z.

That just seems kinda dumb to me. Why would you want to purposely set equipment up to operate inefficiently and out of balance? Your ouput level would drop somewhat, and there would most likely be some noticeable HUM due to the imbalance.
Different strokes I guess

I've heard of this before. From what I was told it was a cool studio trick to get a Marshall JCM 800 to sound like it might explode, lot's of OD. Of course it would work for other amps too but we happened to be talking about that particular amp. You wouldn't want to run your amp like that all the time though. The tubes would be wasted pretty quick too. I'm interested to see what Myles has to say as I've never had the guts to try it with any of my gear.
