I was reading the rectifier thread the Dr. originally posted. I was wondering if anyone has experience with this tube in a Jr. and if I could find out more?
Thanks.

I remember asking Myles about this a while ago and him saying it is not a good idea. A 5V4 would work as a smaller rec, but a 5y3 would be too big of a step down.

It will work, but it sounds a bit spongy and produces a lot of heat.

Its just the big voltage drop from the 5Y3 is converted into heat. Z says its perfectly safe to to with the 2XEL84 amps. I've used it in a maz 18 for a couple of gigs (when I was running it into a 112 cab with a celsetion blue, thought it might be safer for the speaker) No issues to speak of, but you could feel the heat coming off the rectifier thru the top vent.

the Ghia uses a 5Y3. I don't see why a Maz jr couldn't.

Rx Jr does too, and I run a 5Y3 in my Jr NR 1x12 with a blue..seemed to fatten the tone a bit, I like it so far.

been trying it out myself now. A little smoother and chewier. Much nicer at home. I have the first band practice since the swap later this week, so I'll bring my 5AR4 just in case.

going the OTHER way, anybody ever try a 5AR4 in a Ghia or RxJR?

It funny because right before the Rx Jr. was released, Dr. Z posted something about the 5AR4 being a "bit too much" or something to that effect... I kind of wanna see what he meant.

This move lasted about 2 weeks. The amp just sounded too rubbery and lacked definition. Didn't feel strong enough. I'm back to it as the Dr. originally prescribed.

I'm back to it as the Dr. originally prescribed. If I had a dollar for every time I've seen that sentence over the years I'd have enough $$ to buy that RxJr I'm lusting after! The doc knows what he's doin'. Phil

Never tried a 5Y3 in my Jr but I do like it with a 5V4GA , creamier edge at lower volume and a bit less output which is fine at home

I've got a 5V4 in mine right now. I tried a 5Y3 first. Really not much difference between any of them. maybe because even though I use the master all the way up I just set the volume to where it's only got a bit of hair on it. Then I back down the guitar for real clean. I'll try a 5U4 and see what happens. It may draw more current so I'll touch the power transformer and be sure it's running cool.

going the OTHER way, anybody ever try a 5AR4 in a Ghia or RxJR? I'm experimenting as we speak. 'Borrowed' a 5AR4 from my 66, stuck it in the ghia, sounds real good, a little mo' headroom, but I can hear the 84's wearing out a LOT faster. Think I'll start followin' doctor's orders...

wait... MORE headroom, but the EL84's are wearing out FASTER? Are you saying you're getting more headroom, but also more power tube GRIND? I assumed more headroom = LESS power tube grind, no?

Doc actually recommends 5V4's for the Maz and other EL84 amps if you read his rectifier info . I think the slightly lower output is a good match for the EL84's while staying tight and responsive . Never thought on it having an effect on the life of the output tubes but if it does that's a plus too .

More voltage also means less distortion and vice versa tubes distort earlier with less voltage. This is why a lot of people love low voltage output stages- they have a softer distortion in my experience but less head room. They also last longer. Brett

Brett That's the way my Maz jr works with the 5V4GA and I like it
