I really want to try a Wreck or StangRay out before plunking down a bunch of money. YouTube videos and internet reviews can only go so far...

I've had both and like both, about, equally the same. The Wreck just woks better for me. If you plan on playing more "clean" stuff, nothing beats a Ray. If you play a good mix of clean and dirty, or right in the middle, nothing beats a Wreck.
Both great amps that can cover some of the same ground. But, yeah... It's best to play them both before dropping the amount of change these bad boys can cost.

I like to 'play the amp' a lot so that's pushing me towards the Zwreck but the sound at the beginning of 'All I Wanted Was A Car', which I'm told is a StangRay, and several demos just seems perfect to me. My current amps (64 Princeton Reverb, Savage Macht 12, and 18-watt Marshall clone) don't get much dirtier than that anyway and I sometimes find myself wanting more headroom for some songs in the set... So far I've played a Z28 (which seems to cover similar ground to my Savage and Princeton), MAZ18 (probably perfect for me but I'm looking for more 'oomph' with this purchase), and the MAZ38 (my favorite so far...my wife even mentioned liking that one more than once).

Yeah, the intro to "All I Wanted was a Car" is definitely a Stangray, probably about 5 or 6 on the volume so it's getting some nice "hair". If you have a Tele, when you plug into a Stangray and turn it up, you can hear "That" tone. One of the few amps that really sounds like the actual clip on a CD. The demo on the Z website does the Stangray A LOT of justice, that's how it really sounds... Probably the most accurate capture of the tone I've ever heard. BTW... Sorry to sort-of hijack your thread too. I seen the "Jacksonville, FL area" and I was just there last week - but didn't have my amp, so it wouldn't have helped anyways .

You came to Jax on purpose? Dear god, man! Lol.... I was "in the area". I stayed at a friends place in Florida for 10 days and we drove all around the state checking it out. Had to check out the home of the world famous Jacksonville Jaguars! I like Summer weather, but Florida is too hot for me!

Yes, that counts as optimism.
