Here's the deal:
SETUP: I have a Maz 8 Studio combo (12" Celestion Blue) running into a brake lite attenuator which splits into the combo speaker as well as a 2x10 stock Dr.Z cab which (i believe) is rated at 85 watts.
LOCATION: Apartment (boo!!!) QUESTION: Would it be worth upgrading one or both of the speakers in to 2x10? In all serious I am not gigging or turning the volume up to any unreasonable levels (brake lite woohoo) ... The Blue breaks up nicely while the stock Z's give much more head room for clean tones, but these are typically both running at the same time. I'm no speaker guru so any thoughts and/or recommendations would be much appriciated since I'm still on the fence about this. Basically "Want vs. Need".
Thanks in advance! - Chris

I have both the 2x10 cab and a Maz 8 combo. I did try a Celestion Gold in the combo because I had one as well as a Creamback and I settled on the Creamback. Yes, it is a loud speaker but it sounds great and gives the headroom needed and I like it better than the stock G12h (and it still sounds great with the BrakeLite). I also have a 2x10 cab that I took out the Docs 10's and put in two lower wattage speakers - a Weber Blue Pup and a Silver Ten 30 watts each. Though I haven't tried it with my Maz 8 it did make my Z28 & Remedy give up the goods sooner. I will have to try that cab with my 8!
and welcome to the forum

What don't you like about the speakers? As far as 'upgrading' them...the Blue IS the upgrade for a lot of people and the Dr Z 10's are a good grade speaker too so it's not like you've got any duds at the APT. With my Carmen Ghia I like Eminence Legends and wound up liking them instead of the Z 10's. A little quieter and earlier break up....speakers are a new world to me and it's worth playing things for some months to know what you don't like or do like so if you try something else you'll have a reference for your ears. You could ask the neighbors what they like better when you crank it up too

and welcome to the forum Hi Steve, Is your Creamback M or H? I have a Maz 8 myself (love this amp!), loaded by a Scumback Scumnico (in the Gold ballpark I guess) and always wondered about the Creamback with this amp (and in my dreams a 1x12 cab with Creamback M to use in parallel with the combo speaker).

Steve: Thanks for the welcome!! I'm more of a reader here than a poster. Definitely a great community. I'll have to do some research on those lower wattage 10" speakers. Do the creambacks come in 10s? Based on a quick google search those Weber's seem to be reasonably priced..
BK: I'm not sure if its based on their wattage or what, but they just seem to too "washy", if that makes any sense. I usually am playing in the Triode mode so it's almost like the amp isn't doing enough for the speakers. Steve's use of the words "give up the goods" almost perfectly encapsulated my conundrum.

If you want low efficiency 10s that sound like creambacks.....get the Celestion 10" greenback.

How long have you had the MAZ 8? Is the Blue broken in?

...literally throwing combinations out there but what about a 10" greenback and 10" gold (just read their output is 40W compared to the 12's) Thanks for getting the convo going, gentlemen!

However it's not the Maz speaker I'm looking to swap, it's from the cab which I got used. Not sure of the manufacturing year on that.

Sounds like you have a very interesting speaker combination.
You aren't going to get speaker breakup from that rig, especially using the 12" & the 2 10"s at apartment volumes.
