I have used nothing but Celestions since I started playing through Dr Z's - G12h, V30, Gold, Creamback. They all have their place and sound(ed) great, and I guess that is what the Good Doctor had in mind. But after reading an old thread where Roscoe (Eric) said he had two Jensens in a closed back cab I thought I'd try one. I picked a gently used P12Q 40 watter off of Reverb.com and loaded into a Z 1x12 cab. "Oh My Goodness!" What a completely different sound and feel - as well as being much lighter (I thought the guy shipped me an empty box). I played my McCarty's and G&L's through the 28 with one or two clicks on the Brakelite and what a sound! easier breakup and grit but very smooth - maybe the way a Deluxe was intended to sound? Anyway, I'm soo very happy I branched out and picked this up. I guess old dogs...............

Thanks for the info - I had not thought of trying a Jensen, never mind a pair of 'em. Glad to hear that you got somethin' good going on.
best regards and cheers always,
Joel

Jensens in a closed-back combo is not really something you come across often (they're usually in open-back combos) but I do recall Eric talking about his cabinet. I've tried my Z-28 through the 12F150 (C12N-type) in my Deluxe Reverb and it definitely emphasizes the American side more. And that 12F150 can really do "tight crunch" nicely--much better than you might expect. I do have a P12Q-type speaker as well, maybe I should try the Z-28 with that sometime.
Glad to hear it's kickin' butt for you--just curious though, is your cab closed-back or open?

It is open back - one of the smaller rectangular Z cabs.

I love the Z-28 through American voiced speakers (Weber 12x150s for me). The Gold 1x12 sounds good, but for me, this amp was made for the "West side of the pond" tones.

Having had my Z28 for awhile, I can say it has been with a gold, G12H30, Greenback, weber 12f150, and even a small bogner 1x12 cube with a V30. They have all worked well! Currently in a 1x12 combo with the greenback. Love it. The 12F150 was in my part open back jenkins cab - worked great, and def much more "american" but right now I love the greenie.

I really liked the Jensons that you could get in the early '90's. I bought quite a few and have sort of stayed a fan for a long time. I have a couple of those Bluebells with the big magnet cover that sound really good in a Deluxe. I also have one at the studio in a Demeter ISO cab that I've been using a lot lately w the Z-28. That speaker really sounds good in the ISO cab.
