This may sound crazy, because the Gold sounds amazing, but has anyone tried a different speaker with their 'Wreck? If so, which one, and your thoughts? How'd it change the sound to your ears? Matt

I believe some folks have tried the creamback. It's on my list to try.

I didn't go too far with my silver 2x12 cab... I bought it, at a good price, minus the Blue... I put a 30wt Weber Alnico Blue Dog in there to pair with the gold. Not sure how the original cab sounds, but this sounds amazing!
So I didn't stray too far.
It is, somewhat, an AC30 voiced amp.... I'm sure a Greenback type speaker would sound pretty good too.

I play mine through the Z Best cabinet mostly at home, and a Matchless cab when playing out (ZBest is too big and bulky to carry for an old man). I love that combination of speakers, the G1230H plus a Vintage 30 (in the Matchless it's a G12H30 and a greenback). For some reason it just does it for me. I think the G12h30 stays kinda clean while the other speaker breaks up earlier and I just love that tone, with all my heads. Z Wreck, Remedy, and StangRay. I'll likely run the Therapy through the same rig. Was even thinking of selling off my Z Wreck cab because I like this combination of speakers better. That or swap out the Celestion Gold for a G12H30 in that cab. (Blasphemy, I know.)

it's my thang.

Thanks for the responses! I am beyond impressed with the 'Wreck's original voice and that Gold, but I have a gig where volume may be an issue. I'm going to try my Weber DT-12 (lower dB's, less efficient speaker) and see if I like it. Hoping to get the Brakelite out of the equation as well. I'll post my findings. But, that Gold...MmmmMmm!!!

I have tried with 2 Scumbacks, an M75 and an H75. It sounds great. But its original voice is still my preferred

Well, I tried the DT-12, and it, too, sounds fantastic through the 'Wreck. It's only a fraction less loud--I still am using the same settings and it still feels/ sounds the same. The Weber speaker is pretty balanced--reminds me a lot of the Gold. Ha, and I still have the Brakelite on! I'll probably go back to the Gold only out of respect for the design.

When the Z Wreck first hit the streets, I got one of the original first Quantum Silver Sets...# 4 in fact. I loved it, but always thought it would suit me a little better with 2 Golds rather than a Blue & a Gold. I decided not to mess with the Doc's recipe on that set. While it was still in mint condition, I sold it and bought a blonde Z Wreck head...and had two 1-12 Z cabs...both with Gold's and that was even BIGGER sounding. When the combo came out, with the thin walled cab and all in one package, I HAD to have that and it is by far my favorite version of the Z Wreck. Not quite as loud. More resonant. Looser feel, but still has that silvery sparkle. I have the Brake-Lite installed and normally have it at 2 clicks. Works wonderful for me. If I'm feeling froggy....I'll turn the BL off and enjoy it in its full glory if I need louder cleans. But am completely sassyfied with 2 clicks!!... ....AND THE GOLD!!!

markT, I'm with ya--the Gold really sings. And, the resonance...man. I am glad I went combo route--the other guitarist in my band has an 18W Jackson Newcastle head/cab, and he can only turn it to like 8:00 before it overpowers everything. The Wreck combo is able to run about 1:30 w/ the BL at 1 click and everyone's happy. Well, not my buddy with the Jackson...heehee...

(As I oft do) I wanna take back something I said previously in this thread: I am not gonna sell off that Wreck cab or replace the freakin' gold in it. Was plaing the StangRay last night through the Z cab - all well and good. Then changed it over to the Matchless cab (with the G12/H30 & Greenback): not nearly as punchy and kinda mushier, and more distorted (but in a creamy smooth way), quite different sounding cabinets. Matchless cabinet sounded good, just different, and btw, I changed it back to the Wreck cab. Hmmmm ........
jj
maybe i be I should plug that wreck into the wreck cab...... hmmmm...

I use a vintage pre-rola celestion with a 1777 cone (essentially a 25-30 watt Celestion Blue) and a 30 watt weber Silver Bell. They are awesome separate and together. I would choose the celestion over the weber if I could only choose one so pretty close to a Gold but a little different.

I've played my Z-Wreck through all of my cabinets here. All Z convertibles....One has a 12" gold, another a 12" V30, the third a 12" creamback 65 and the last is a stock Z 2x10. Tried them open and close-backed and I always return to the gold, lol. It sounds so good!

Put the Gold back in. It feels right. Haha. Not to say that Weber DT-12 wasn't up to snuff--I like that speaker aLOT. But, the Gold's punch and break up is wonderful. And, I like it w/ the volume at 1:30. The neighbors, though...

You might want to look into the WGS Blackhawk 50. Same character as the blue and gold, a little less bright than the gold but also a little less volume. I've been using mine with the ghia in place of the blue and I'm really liking so far.
