I just bought exactly what the DR Z website recommended and I was not disappointed, but you've had the Monza a lot longer than me. What are you looking for different wise. The plus side with Doc's recommended tube selection is that they are the most affordable.

when I had mine I played around with different tube manufacturers and even some different values of the same tubes (weaker rated tubes). I went back to the what the Dr Shipped with and enjoyed the amp. my 2 cents, Todd

Wanted my Monza to quack like my Ghia (w/Strat) and a Jan Phillips 5751 in V1 did the trick. I tried lower output 12x variations in v2, but felt the PI wanted more power. Anyway, a 5751 in either position would restore some vintage chime and headroom buried in the distortion, and the LPS in V2 is not a bad choice. Seems to be just the opposite with the power tubes. The vintage Sylvanias that sound great in my Ghia sounded too raggedy/spitty in the Monza, so I went back to the stock JJs. Figure the Monza is hotter amp, tone-wise, and you can't starve its high gain circuitry too much. I also swapped the 5AR4 with a 5V4, which puts the plate voltage somewhere between the 5AR4 and a 5U4. Very subtle, but I know it's running at least 10-15 volts lower, giving it more sag than the 5ar4.

I've got a Tung-Sol 12AX7 re-issue in V1, and a Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V2. Both good as far as I can tell; I haven't strayed outside of 12AX7's in this amp, though... mostly because I've never wanted to "fix" something that I was hearing in the tone.

Mine shipped with Sovtek 12AX7LPS in V1 and V2. I tried various NOS RCa 12AX7A's and JJ's, Tung Sol, Mullard RI's, and some others, and went back to the original Sovteks. I can't believe it, but they sounded the best. I've never liked Sovteks in any of my amps, except for when they came in a Z amp from the factory. He does know best...
