I am making my way back to Z land after a long trial period. Anyone want advice on another amp, I bet I owned it at some point ! I have been really considering a maz jr studio combo for a while now. Today, however, I plugged into an M12 sitting on top of a suhr 1x12 closed back loaded with a WGS Veteren 30. Boy was I surprised. I have known of the M12 for a while, but, it gets so much press as the pedal players amp, that I kinda ignored it. Just as a plug in and play Its so rich sounding. I used a stock fender standard tele and was getting the best Thumpy bridge pickup tones using the lower strings. I guess I finally get it. Loud clean tones at the sweet spot. Prior to trying it I thought loud clean meant strident sounding. I stand corrected......loud cleans at the sweet spot mean clean tones with growl! "Soft serve cleans " if you will. I kept switching back and forth between a Maz Jr and what I had to finally admit to myself was that the JR is a loud MFer. Not doggin it at all, but, I think I might be happier with the M12 for my small venue needs. Of course I did try a paisley drive with it and it was glorious sounding. Its really made me rethink my idea of what is going to work for me. one last thing.....it seems PLENTY loud for a small venue. I play in a band where everyone respects each others ears and I see this being no problem for the little dives I play in. I wish I could play a combo. I have a feeling I would love a g12h30 in one. That or a Gold. Very stoked......feeling like I am on to something here. Very tired of the search my friends

Nice amp, for sure. I was hooked on the M12 at Motor City Guitar as well after playing it through the open-back Dr. Z 2×12 sitting under a Stang Ray. (And that Stang Ray! My goodness, how nice is that thing, huh? But I digress.)
I agree with your "soft serve cleans" comment, as the amp kinda breaks up and gets soft & hairy around 1–2 o'clock on the volume knob (depending upon the speaker and the Bass/Treble knob settings, of course). And it's definitely "loud enough" up there.
I'm currently looking to transition my head into a 1×12 combo, in order to make it a permanent fixture at home (i.e., my go-to everyday amp). The M12 likes a lot of different speakers; my favorite pairing is the Scumback M75-PVC (an "original greenback" clone) but the WGS ET-65 was fantastic, as well as the Blue, and also a Weber 2×10 cab (Jensen clones).

I was really impressed. I have seen it sitting there 100 times. This may sound weird, but, it made me feel like I was playing an acoustic guitar plugged into a PA. I have always missed how my electric guitars lacked that full bodied acoustic sound along with all that stuff you can do on an acoustic like muting strings and strumming for that matter. I had the Tele really sounding full bodied. Its not that it sounded like an acoustic, but, more over it FELT like I was playing my Taylor.

Right now I am trying to decide on the combo or the head cab route with the M12. I like the grab and go benefits of the combo. Just wondering what the sound of the combo is compared with the head/ cab combination.

It's not as "big," nor is it as dynamic IMHO. But it surely is easier to tote...

James, I get what you're saying about the "acoustic" M12 thing. My guitars really "ring out" quite well through the M12 (maybe it's because I just love my Tele through it, I don't know). If you're wondering about the combo, stay tuned because I have a 1x12 combo cab coming my way, and I'll be going from head + 1×12 (Avatar) cab --> 1×12 combo. I'll post my opinion when the cabinet arrives. (I usually prefer head + cab where I'll be using the Brake Lite, so I can put the attenuator atop the amp for easier control. But I don't use attenuation with the M12, so I figured why not just make it a combo. Plus, it's a light amp, so the combo shouldn't be very heavy either.)

Awesome Mark......I look forward to your report! My guess is that it will sound slightly different, but, not better per se. Again, for me, killer grab and go tones are priceless.

My first m12 was a Z 1x10 combo... Sounded much bigger than it looked with a Weber silver 10 alnico.

Seems like a special amp for sure. What config do you have now?

I've finally completed my M12 head + 1×12 cab --> 1×12 combo switch. My M12 now resides in a Mather-made 1×12 combo cab (you'd never know it's not a Z cab, it's really nice) along with my beloved Scumback M75-PVC speaker. I really can't tell much of any difference... which isn't surprising, since it was an open-back 1×12 cab and it's now a 1×12 open-back combo (both high-quality birch ply cabs). Pretty manageable for a combo, too--about the same size as a Deluxe Reverb but a little lighter.

Mark - The Doc's website says the M12 1x12 combo weighs 60 lbs!! Is your Mather cab significantly smaller than the Doc's 1x12?

Mark - The Doc's website says the M12 1x12 combo weighs 60 lbs!! Is your Mather cab significantly smaller than the Doc's 1x12? My bathroom scale says that my 1×12 combo is 40.5 lbs., so it's pretty manageable. (Same size as the "regular" 1×12 combos--this is not a "studio combo" or anything like that.) Keep in mind that the M12 is a fairly light chassis (for a Dr. Z amp). I'd have a hard time believing that the Doc's combo would be too much heavier than mine, and definitely not 60 lbs. as it says on his site (unless it's got a JBL in there, or something). Humbucker Music's specs say 50 lbs. for the 1×12, though..

Thanks, Mark. I was surprised at the weight on the Doc's website. I figured something was up when it showed just about every 1x12 combo as weighing 60 lbs.
