I've got a maz 38 sr. I keep my volume at 12 and my master at 3. It seems this is as loud as the amp gets but I need more out of it. I switched to eurotubes (jj's) and they sound great but Im wondering if any of you have suggestions for tubes to give me more. Thanks Ryan

Master on max is all you'll get. After that you'll need more, or more efficient, speakers.

With the master beyond 3 it just starts breaking up. My speakers are a tone tubby ceramic 12 and a weber michigan alnico 12 so they should be able to handle the load. I run them parralel with a y cable.

You're really pushing some serious db. If you need more than that you'll need a different amp. Tubes won't do it.

I run them parralel with a y cable. Turn your Vol down and Master on 12 . plug in the low input , that will give it all the amp has , use a pedal to give it some hair , or get a Tonker

Am I right to believe that my ears would be bleeding with a max master and high volume setting on a maz 38?

Am I right to believe that my ears would be bleeding with a max master and high volume setting on a maz 38? That depends...my 1st Z was a Maz38 and playing at outdoor festivals where there is nothing behind your amp, I was needing more headroom too. Inside in a club setting it was fine and usually had more than enough volume.

Wow......I've got a maz 38 NR with the blues...and the only comment that I ever get at any venue is "turn down".....it sucks, but 90% of the time I can only run both master and volume on about 10 o'clock!! These aren't tiny venues either...boy, I'm envious...I WISH I could turn up that loud! haha! Wow....that's loud (our other guitar players handwired ac30 cant keep up at all!haha)

If adjusting the master doesn't work you could try Celestion Century speakers. Really bright, and louder than anything I've ever heard (rated 102 dB, but they are noticably louder than the tonker to my ears). For clean headroom they are the ticket for me. Bonus is they are really light, too.

Yeah i agree with the speakers, i dont think it was metioned if the amp in question is a 1-12, 2-12, head & cab etc. I had a 38 1-12, and could/would run out of headroom with it as well on a loud stage. .... At a certain point turning up the master just seems to saturate and compress more without any useful volume. But adding a speaker was much louder. If your already running a 2-12 set up, than i have to agree that your best option is some more efficient speakers. Beyond that, little tweaks are all thats left i'm afraid. You could try 7189's or EL84-L (NOS) they have higher ratings and hang on longer for just a bit more headroom before they start to cave in, and make sure ya got your pre tubes dialed in, and your driver, ... ones with nice high current drive! If your kinda close to begin with, ya might get there with all these.
For recording i love Cathode biased El84's, but for live i tend away from them for this reason. I do have a 7189A based amp that is combo Fixed and cathode biased, as well as ultralinear, and it REALLY stays firm and punchy, right up to max.

I've got a pair of the first Celestion Centurys. They are wickedly bright and fast. I tried one in my Evans amp and it was too crispy and had too much cone cry for me. Then I put it in one of my old tweed Deluxes. It sounds good in there and makes the amp louder than even when I had a JBL D120 in it. If they changed the Century it might be useful but I don't think I'd want to use them in a Z amp, but I never tried that combo so who knows.
