If I wanted to indulge myself a little in NOS tubes for my Mazerati, which tubes would be the best to change (rectifier, preamp, power)?
What should I be looking for as far as brand/models to replace the modern stock tubes?
Aside from NOS, are there any production run tubes that are better than others?
Thanks

Put in a really good 12ax7 in V1, one of my favorites is the Raytheon black plates from around 1960. Then get a good rectifier tube like a Mullard. Even a used one on ebay in good shape will last for 15 years. As far as new production tubes in the 12ax7 types... Tung Sol, JJ, Groove Tubes Mullard copy 12ax7, or the Svetlana are all good tubes, they just don't last as long as the NOS stuff. As far a rectifiers go the new ones are not that good.

Thanks for you're help...I ordered the Mullard 12AX7 that you recommended but haven't gotten it yet. I also ordered a GE 5AR Rectifier. Wish me luck.

I just got the Mullard 12AX7 and took out the JJ ECC 83 S that came in my Mazerati. At first I was skeptical but I think the Mullard sounds warmer and more compressed. I don;t know if it's worth the near $40 I paid for it but it is an improvement. Thanks again for the tip...I'll let you guys know when I get the NOS rectifier.

The differences on the preamp tube are subtle. When I changed mine I was glad it wasn't one of those 80$ preamp tubes! But yeah, warmer and more compressed is how I'd describe it too. The rectifier is a more noticeable change.

No changes to my Z yet, I just bought it last Friday. However, I have used NOS in my Carr Hammerhead with very noticable difference. The Brimar CV4004 yields a very open almost 3D sound with sweet, never harsh, highs. I notcied Mike from KCA recommending the Brimar in other posts, but KCA is sold out. I found some at a reasonable price ($26.50) at www.tube-shop.com/usa/prod_nos_search_brand.asp
