I have a question about replacing El-84's in my amp, thought the amp should have a little more volume since it does not seem as loud as my Deluxe Reverb, so I ordered a matched set of JJ/Telsa El-84's from the TubeDepot just today, did not know of the #6 rating on the tubes that came with the amp. Will the JJ's be OK? , or should I use only the Groove Tubes #6's Also do you think the new tubes will give any volume increase?Any info would be appreciated, Thanks

The Groove Tube EL-84S is a JJ EL-84. The big difference is that Groove Tubes dynamically matches their tubes, in addition to the distortion rating (1-10) they assign to their tubes. Most vendors and dealers only static match their tubes, or buy them already matched from their distributor. Think of it this way: Static matching matches operating characteristics at idle, dynamic matching matches these characteristics at idle and full throttle. It's a more thorough testing and matching process. And yes, if your old power tubes are worn out, you should notice a difference in volume, punch, and tone. Let us know how it works out! Harold

Put new power tubes in the Maz-18 yesterday, put in the Groove Tubes EL84 # 6's, matched set, and added a RCA- 7025 in the V1 socket, the amp has more head room now, but, has lost some gain, not real happy with new sound, may be I should go to hotter tube? Not real sure how these Groove are rated, is the lower number mean higher gain or higher number is higher gain? Anyway, giged tonight and took an amp I was going to sell, A Fender Supersonic combo, was really shocked how good it sounded! Don't think I'm going to sell it now, hope I can get this Max-18 2/10 combo to deliver the goods for me , will keep trying. Any suggestions?

For Groove Tubes:
The lower the rating the earlier it will break up. (power tubes only)
I'd play around with different tubes in V1.

I'm reading between the lines a bit and if you are after a super high gain sound like the Prosonic is capable of the Maz 18 may not be what you want as those are 2 totally different amps. Could you be a bit more specific on what you are trying to get as far as sound and perhaps a few can jump in here with suggestions .

I'm not really a high gain type of player, the Jr. was bought used, ,it had a good full tone with nice breakup with volume at about 8 and master at about 7 or 8. Since I've put in the new GT #6 power tubes, the crunch is sort of gone and sounding a little thin. I removed the RCA-7025 from V-1 and put the original sovtek ecc83 back in but pretty much same sound, maybee I should go to lower number El-84 to get the gain back, but the tubes I replaced were the same number that were in there originally. unless the old tubes being weeker sounded different, don't know?

Well Helaula!! My doorbell rang and it was Fedx with my tubes I bought from the TubeDepot, now since GrooveTubes is suppose to be JJ's/Telsa , I take out the GrooveTubes and put the JJ's and the amp sounds AMAZING! So much for the GrooveTubes, I'll just save them for emergencys, from now on I will always order the JJ's. Problem solved.

Strange the GT's would not sound right from new . Was the difference HUGE ?? It is possable you got a bad tube and GT does warrant them against defects so you may be able to return them . I would be willing to bet something was wrong with one of the GT's Anyway , glad you got it sounding good ;D

Just to let everyone know, I visualy compaired the new GrooveTubes and the new JJ's and noticed that the bottom plate was different in shape, don't know if this matters but the amp really sounds good now with JJ's. I may return the GT's and see if another new set is the same. Good to have the TONE back!

Perhaps there was some sort of shipping damage and the tubes may also have gone out of match. Call Rick Benson at GT toll free at 1-800-459-5687 and the set will be replaced under warranty.

Told ya GT would look after them You can have the best tubes but shipping can do some nasty things to tubes if they get bashed around some .
