Just ordered a new MAZ 38 NR head from Humbucker Music today. They have already shipped it (awesome!) but it probably won't get here until Tuesday (not as awesome). So stoked to finally be getting one! I borrowed a head from a buddy of mine a couple of weeks ago and played through my Bill Jenkins 2x12 cab with my pedal board and couldn't believe the tones I was getting! The MAZ just loved everything I threw at it. Been GASing for one ever since. The anticipation is killing me!
I currently own a Port City Pearl 100w head, which is very nice and has pretty glorious clean tones. It is supposed to be a great platform for pedals too. However, I've been struggling to find the love between my pedalboard and the Pearl. With my friends MAZ it was a perfect match. I set up a great sounding clean tone, danced around on the pedals, and everything sounded amazing! He had an older model (no EQ bypass and attached power cord) but as I understand it, the Doc has made some improvements to the circuit. Hard to imagine improving on that sound!

Congrats on the amp, and welcome to the forum! I've got one of those older 38 NR's with the attached power cord. I got it quite a while ago at Willcutts. I went down to audition all four MAZ's (18 and 38 reverb and NR) and bring home the winner. After a LONG A/B/C/D test (thank you to Eric and Brandon...as I was in their shop most of the morning and afternoon) I was stuck. I LOVED the 18 NR and knew it was going home with me. It's still my #1 amp. But, the 38 NR was just sooooo good. (I still say that the 38 NR with my Room Mate reverb in front of the amp (not in the loop) through my Z-Best or 2X12 open back will hang or beat ANY Fender Twin Reverb I've ever played. It is that good.) So, I left that day with the 18 NR but it wasn't more than a few days later that I was on the phone to Eric saying "Send me that 38 NR too". Even though I really didn't have the money at the time for two amps it was a great call. I'm very glad I have both of the twins. AND mine's been played by Buddy Whittington which is like being blessed by the Pope.

Welcome to the Forum - lot of great people and information here! Here's a setting for you to tryout when you get your amp. This is the setting Buddy Whittington used when he played at the International Blues Fest in Windsor two years ago. It's loud but glorious! If you haven't done so already, check out Buddy on You-tube. Some killer vids using a Maz 38.

Along with Buddy, Texas Slim is another one of my favorite Maz 38 players in Dallas. He plays very clean and uses a TS-9 for overdrive.

Thanks Phil! Wow! That's pretty awesome to have BOTH the 38 and the 18. I loved the 18 too but have always been more of a pedal guy so I wanted more clean headroom. I like my cleans to be very clean and full and let the pedals give me the dirt. Playing through 2 G12H30s. Dirt pedals are Wampler Euphoria, RockBox Boiling Point and Dr. Scientist Elements. Been hearing a lot about Buddy Whittington on this forum so I guess I'd better check him out!

Thanks for the Buddy clip Mike! Now I get it! Buddy rips and has killer tone! Great example of what the MAZ can do too. You're welcome! I actually have 3 Maz 38s - a Maz 38 NR, a Maz 38 Bluesbreaker 3x10 Combo (with reverb), and a Super Z, which is another Maz 38 3-10 combo (formerly used by Joe Walsh - watch/listen to DVD When Hell Freezes Over - that is a Maz 38!)

No wonder I can't find any used MAZs for sale. Apparently you own them all! I heard about the MAZ originally being developed for Joe Walsh. That's a pretty good place to start cuz Joe certainly knows a thing or two about great guitar tone! I will check out the DVD so I can brag to my buddies that I have the same amp that made those tones. Thanks!

Here's BW playing his Maz 38 great tone and playing. His rhythm player isn't bad either! Yeah, it wouldn't suck to have Gary Moore as your "rhythm player" would it?

Still trying to figure out how the MAZ 38 is louder than a lot of 100W heads.
