Short ribbed grey plates.... Are these a desirable preamp tube? There's a couple for sale locally that I was thinking of buying.
Cheers!!

My goodness yes! Thousands of them were used in Fender amps.

That's what my dad and his friend have in their '66 Deluxe, Twin, and Super Reverbs. They say it is a very good tube.

Buying from a reputable tube vendor is the most important thing. As maddog said there's a ton of disreputable ones. There are many fakes and old worn out tubes out there for sale. You can't go wrong with guys like KCA NOS tubes and Doug's Tubes.

Thanks, guys.. They're for sale locally on craigslist. He says they test strong... Just whether to believe him or not. Seems like a good guy, and 45 bucks for the pair might be worth the gamble? Love to have them for my ghia:)

The gamble might be worth it.
However, how does he define "good?" What sort of tester does he use? What are the results from this "test" he performed? I'm not always skeptical about making purchasing something, but when I am, it's because I loathe wasting money...

I'll check further with him... All he said was that they test 'excellent on his tube tester' I'm not that knowledgable with these things. Any questions I should ask, or tests I should have him demonstrate?

Is it like these NOS RCA's? Provided that they "test good" as stated, then yes it's a great deal. Man, I tell ya... one of these days all the good NOS stuff is just gonna go "poof!" and we're all gonna be SOL. I sure as heck hope that somebody gets their act together and starts building legitimately good tubes again. I refuse to believe that it wouldn't be profitable for whoever makes that happen.Sorry for ranting in your thread, westcoast... Keep us posted after you've tried those tubes.

I have this exact tube and it is good. I put it in V1 of my Maz Jr and it made a difference over the JJ ecc83 or whatever was in there. I went to a band practice with the new tube installed to see how it would do and didn't say anything to the others about it as I didn't know if there would be a difference. They asked me if I did something different. The tube seemed to add a little more bass and high end and everything just sounded fuller and better overall. I have since sold my Maz and now the tube is in V1 of my SRZ.
Whether or not this craigslist tube is good or not will be hard to tell, but might be worth a try. I would ask to see the tube(s) on the tester to see for yourself. You may want to do a little research before hand as well getting an idea of good tube value ranges for this particular tube. Where did the tube come from etc? Pulled from grandma's organ or another amp???

The Mercury 204 is just a basic emission tester I believe. It's not going to tell you very much about how much life is left in the tube. Good testers are the the 'mutual conductance' type. Even one of those should be viewed with a grain of salt unless it has been recently calibrated.

I read up on that, and realized as well that it's not a good test. He said they came out of a Lowrey organ. I'm going to go ahead and buy them, and since he's local to me, he's given me a grace period where if they crap out in a month he'll reimburse me. Don't think he's trying to make a bunch of cash, just unloading some tubes. Can't go wrong with that:)
I'll report back. Thanks for the tips, guys. I love this forum:)

I'm probably at 80% success with vintage tube gambles like this and when they've been bad, the seller has almost always made good.
I'll do it if I'm curious and it's really cheap compared to KCA, but if I know it's what I specifically want then I go with KCA for guaranteed great results.
I got my first RCA 7025/12AX7A for $20 on fleaBay ANOS in box a couple of years ago. It's been great in a Swart, a Maz 18 and currently in my Rambler.

I lucked up at the UGA where I worked. They had electronic shops and had tubes that were not beings used because everything is not using tubes anymore. I still have about 15 RCA 7025's and 7 blackplates. I also have some RCA mullards along with amprex, GE and quite a few others. I know there are other electronic shops over there but I'm retired. I did hit the jackpot and these will last me for a good while. I also bought up some =C= tubes before they got to expensive and quite making them.

I didn't mention that I also found nos mullard, Bugle boys, tesla, tungstram and lots of telefunkens. they didn't have any new production. Also had nos caps, resistors, diodes and op amps, ect. Gave quite a few away to friends. I actually have a key that will get me back into those shops but I'm not a thief. I asked for everything I got. I also have a gate key to the UGA stadium so I could probably go and watch ballgames. I did all outside lighting, high voltage and just electrical work there.
