I used my Ghia last night with my ZBest and a very stripped down pedal board (Franklin SD-1 mod, Clark Gainster, MI Crunch Box, Fender tuner and Barge DB-2). I played one set with a Mullard 12AT7 in V1, then in 2 and 3 switched to a Tung-Sol 12AX7 reissue, and I have to say that as sweet as that little Mullard was on clean and semi distorted stuff, the Tung -Sol was absolutely outsanding. Very focused and tight, with a nice little snarl to it as well. I think I'm going to leave it in there and keep the Raytheon it replaced in my spare box for recording...
Cross posted in the Ghia section as well. Sorry for that.

The Tung Sols are all over the place QA wise just as any other new production tube and there are good ones and junk ones.
NEVER judge a tube as being a generically good example if you get it from KCA as Mike over there tests every tube very carefully and is a very picky fellow when it comes to getting things right. No matter what tube you get from him it will be a great example of a cherry picked tube from a lot of a particular type so ..... just because it comes from KCA it does not mean it is magic .... you might get the same tube elsewhere and not be as happy.
At NAMM GT is going to be distributing actual spec sheets based on actual testing of their own exclusive tubes with real data. For as long as tubes have been around, everybody just duplicates RCA or GE book spec .... if they sell a 12AX7 they will just show the original target spec as "their" spec.
But ..... NO tubes today have the bulk of a run at spec and the gain of a 12AX7 today, that is said to be "100" is rarely over 85-88 and there are other differences too. So ... when somebody like Mike at KCA cherry picks tubes you are really getting something closer to original actual intended design spec.
During 2007 GT will be putting out data sheets on EVERYBODIES tubes with actual data from tests. I think everybody may find these results interesting to say the least. Hopefully all the tube makers will tighten up their QA once they know that there is a watch dog and the results are being made available for everybody.
