Well after nearly a month in the world of Z, I have to say that it seems like I am getting the hang of this thing. I thought I had it on our first time out together...wrong...just wrong. It has taken many, many sessions of tweaking to get it right, and after all this time has gone by, I think I have it. As my first thread stated, I am an acoustic player who uses electric components for my personal, optimal tone. This tonal requirement has provided me with a nearly constant uphill battle. I will adjust something, play a song, record the song, listen back, and think "Wow that sounds like an electric." Other times I get it to sound like an acoustic, but not a pretty acoustic. So, back and forth I go, over and over again. Finally I found something that works, and works well.
I have to admit, I had a moment where I nearly gave up hope and started shopping for a Fender Super Reverb again... The Super is the reason I go into this tube amp madness in the first place and I still want one. I can plug into a '66, make minor adjustments, and find the perfect tone. I really didn't expect life to be so different here in Z land. I knew it would be different (6L6 v. EL84, etc), but I didn't know just how different.
I have replaced the tubes in V1/V2 with new ECC83s, and V3 with a Phillips JAN 12AT7. I have put two used 12AX7's in V4 and V5 that tested well enough until I come across a good deal on some new or NOS replacements. Learning this new language has been a blast as well!

You may want to consider an Emi Tonker for that amp big sound, super clean, does not color up the sound and can handle whatever you throw at it...They dont seem to get much love but it might move you closer to where you want to be..YMMV of course...good luck!

After reading your recommendation, I did some reading on this speaker. Do you have experience with it and can you verify the "British" sound that it is advertised to have? On a side note, my 38 has two different speakers in it...so... do I replace one or both? I don't have the ability to "speaker test," but I will invest in good quality equipment.

what I hear may not be what you hear...what I can tell you is that it is a very large sounding speaker, even with a Tele it does not rip your head off with treble...can handle massive bottom end as well...a clean sounding speaker...I do have exp. with the Tonker I used one in a MAZ38NR 1-12 combo...I really liked it...I am not sure how british sounding it is as I am not a big celestion fan overall..here is a link to the sound clips which are quite clear and well done...it will give you an idea of what this speaker can do...I would lean into replacing only one of the speakers in the combo that way you will have the tonker with two pairing options to choose from right off the bat... www.eminence.com/support/tone-guide/?model=Tonker
