What tube options are there for Remedy P.I. (V3) and what is recommended to take edge off high end?

I'm running a 5751 in V1 on mine. I will have to look and see what I have in V3. It's either an NOS 12AX7 or a CV4024. The 5751 lowered the gain slightly and sounds a little less grainy. Maybe a little smoother. I haven't noticed a high end bite on my Remedy. What speaker are you using with yours? A V30 may be a little spiky, particularly if it isn't well broken in..

I think Z-Amps recommends a Tung Sol 12AX7 in the PI. Some JJECC83 or new production Mullards (Russian) may sound more round... or not. I have a new Mullard in Remedy PI socket now. I found that swapping for a NOS 12AX7, 7025 or ECC83, helped "soften" the highs as some of my Teles used to need it. But when the prices of NOS pre-amp tubes started to climb, I started paying more attention to tube posts here and for what Z recommends as they know their chit... I have since, in order to save the NOS tubes I currently own, I figured out what new production tube does what for my amps and buy the more budget priced new tubes that I have been OK with... I have been happy for the most part in 12AX7 types with the JJ, Tung Sol, Mullard and Sovtek pre-amp tubes and have done comparison lissening with NOS and the new tubes hold their own for me, I still get an oddball but the dealers take care of me. Buy from the good, proven sources as the good ones tend to have better customer service and can help you over the phone or via email.
Bottom line it's up to how you hear it. I don't sit and swap tubes much any more but it was interesting trying to hear nuance that you hear about here. Some tone, gain, etc changes with different tubes are very distinct and some are very subtle. Tubes and Speakers are easily swapped if you have the time and inclination... and dough, as it can become time consuming and expensive. I like to read other's opinions here and other places, which often saves me alot of time... and money.

Thanks for replies. Could be the V30, although it should be broken in pretty well. Issue is mostly when using esquire or tele. Might try a home made beam blocker along with tube change.

The Creamback sounds great in the Remedy if you are looking to really change the tone. Tubes will get you some change but the speaker will really make an impact.

I'm not sure a PI is going to change your top-end tone much. Nonetheless, I use Sovtek 12AX7LPS's as the phase inverter for amps that use a 12AX7 there; they work well. I'd look more at V1 (the first position tube) if you really want to affect the amp's tone.
What kind of speaker are you using, though? That could also be where your harshness is coming from...

Mostly using a V30 in 112 avatar vintage cab. Stock Z-Best for outside gigs. Not a problem with Z-Best even though it has a V30 & a G12H30.

Hey strat59, I just changed out the stock jj 12ax7s with some GE jan 12ax7s I had- big difference in the Rem. The breakup is finer- not as grainy. I can get glassy cleanish with single coil pickups, and much smoother breakup with humbuckers. Just a bit more headroom as well. It was hard enough to stop playing the thing with the jjs, now Im completely helpless to its power over me.

I have a remedy with a 52 reissue that I use if I simply roll back the tone a few notches it takes the hair of the high-end works for Vince Gill works for me.
