Perhaps not so much an adventure as a useful daytrip...
I just received my NOS JAN Phillips/Sylvania 5AR4 (mislabeled 5V4GA) from Mike at KCA. Today I popped it into my Route 66 before band practice. Honestly, I didn't hear much change at first - maybe a bit cleaner at first. During practice however, more changes began to make themselves apparent. The bottom end seemed slightly tightened, touch sensativity extended, and the 'cleaner' quality I heard earlier became more accurately translated to increased articulation. All in all, a nice little tweak - and one I should be able to enjoy for years given the extended life of these old tubes.
I should be ordering some tubes for varying positions soon...I shall keep the updates going.

Sounds like a happy ending to a sad UPS shipping story! ;D Glad to hear the 66 is working for you. I'm tempted to purchase one of those tubes myself.

I have that same tube rec in my 45, bought it from Mike too with a NOS GEC EF86. It's definately very tight in that amp!

I love that rec, I've tried mine in a 66, KT45, MAZ Jr NR and 'Rati as well as a Sewell TexaPlex 50 and it improved each one, makes them more playable to me..BUT, I prefered a SS rec plug in the 66 and KT45 FWIW, that REALLY tightened up the bottom end and made the 66 really shine in a live setting IMO. The biggest improvement with this rec was my MAZ Jr NR, what an improvement in that amp !
