I am looking for a decent all-around mic for recording acoustic guitar and miking cabs (room, not really close miking) in the Man Cave.
I almost bought one of these today but decided to wait to do a little more research.
Is anyone using one of these to record guitar amps and if so.....how do you like it?

Thanks Roscoe....I'll look at that. What would you recommend to room mike guitar cabs? Keith

What mics do you have?

Lol...that's just it ....none really! I have a sm58 that I take the ball of from time to time and drape over the cab but I'm really just getting into this. So, you recommend me a couple good, mid-priced mics and I'll follow. This is new ground for me and it may never get past this early experimenting. However, I'm not opposed to picking up a couple decent mics to maybe record some acoustic instruments and guitar cabs. Keith

Lemme think on that. As you have a good dynamic, the other 2 would be a condensor & a ribbon.

As long as the ribbon doesn't put me into the $1,300 range, we're good " I have a Z28 and a Therapy head to get in the near term ! But yes, any recommendations you may have will be greatly appreciated. Keith

Okay back to mics. I've been using an Shure SM7b with great results. It kills micing cabs and for vocals. Imho it's a must have in the studio.

Truth be known, I made this post knowing darn well that roscoe would be one to replay and I will certainly follow whatever he recommends. I have a SM58 that I have used in the past to record cabs a couple times, However, I'm looking at giving his recording thing the old boy scout effort and see what I can get out of it. Keith

Keith, First fix is cheap. Get a good mic stand w a boom. That mic draped over the cabinet is picking up the sound Way Off Axis. Get a stand then we'll talk about moving the mic around.
And thanks guys.

I have a Bluebird. I like it a lot. I've used it with good results on guitar amps, vocals, and acoustic guitars. I will say I don't have a ton of experience like Roscoe, but I found it to be a good sounding and fairly forgiving (in terms of placement, etc) piece. For what I do in the basement, I've had good results with a 57, e609, the bluebird, and a cascade fathead ribbon. The fathead is pretty inexpensive for a ribbon, and I find it to be a nice match in a 2 mic scenario with the 57. It's pretty dark & warm, compared to the brightness of the 57.
Your mileage may vary, of course. Have fun!

Even the guys at my local shop recommended the e609 as well, but they didn't have one in stock. One of the guys who liked the e609 highly recommended the Blue as well...and it just looks so cool I think I'll do some more research and get a ribbon down the road in case this recording foray turns into a passing fancy. However, there would be nothing wrong with having a couple good mics hanging around for the times when the fancy strikes. So, its a busy week this week but if I get a chance I'll drop by the shop and get a boom stand and the mic and start fiddling from there. Keith

Keith You'll obviously need the boom stand for any condenser/ribbon mic you'll get, but another thing I've found useful (at home, not for gigs/places with other people) is a little desk tripod that would usually be used for podcasting. It's the perfect height for 1x12 cabs and small combos. Works with both my 57 and e609. Very easy to move around and adjust. Again, I wouldn't use it live, or even in a crowded session, as it's pretty easy to knock over, but for one dude in the basement type stuff, it's great. I'll get a pic later if you want to see what I'm getting at.

One love/hate thing about the bluebird- the shock mount. Love- the way the bottom of the mic is threaded and screws directly into the shock mount. Hate- the thumbscrew adjustment that adjusts the angle of the shock mount in relation to the boom. It's a real PITA to adjust and get it to stay in place.

A second hand Royer Labs R-121 Ribbon mic would be good. I use a Rode K2 mic for the Studio but I changed the Russian tube for a NOS West German tube to sweeten the sound. It's an excellent budget choice. For live work I use a Heil PR-31BW.

That's great. I'm in no rush so I won't buy anything this week anyway. What I will do is pick up a boom stand, though, and if I get a chance on the weekend I can mess around with the SM58. Keith

Yeah, I ended up with the one with the Lundahl transformer. I really like the sound, but without a direct comparison to the other versions, I can't comment on the differences between them.

Once you figure out how it works, it's not so bad.

It has a solid cast-iron base and is a perfect height for a 112 cab. So, this is a good start for my home recording endeavour

Thanks roscoe. I'm heading to my local shop today to see what they have on the shelf. They stock a few mics, so I'll see what they have. That AT ribbon is not a bad price Keith

They did have a Bluebird Blue and an ATM450 in stock, though. So, I may pick those up later in the week (or at least one of them). Keith

So, I bought the Bluebird Blue large diaphragm today Next up will be the ATM450 small diaphragm (next month) and if I seem to spend a bit of time at this, I'll pick up the ribbon that roscoe recommended. My main goal as a basement dweller with the recording is that it should force me to be a little more regimented in playing and practicing (since I don't have a band, etc). I've been trying to get more proficient as playing for years, but tend to noodle when I finally find time to play. The recording part will hopefully make me focus a little more. Thanks for the help everyone. Cheers Keith
