I'm sure this has been tackled before, but anyway, how does the number rating affect tone? I just replaced the GT #6's that were in the amp when I got it (used) with some JJ #5 (matched pair). I haven't had a chance to really open her up yet, but seems to be a little brighter? By the way the amp in question is a Maz Jr NR head.
Also does anyone have any suggetions regarding 12AX7's? Am planning on replacing these as well.

Check out this page at Myles' site. I think it has what you're looking for. www.guitaramplifierblueprinting.com/Rating.htmlWith regard to 12AX7's, my current favorite is a NOS Tungsram. In new production tubes, I like the Chinese (Shuguang?) units that are sold by a variety of vendors, the JJ ECC83S, and the GT-12AX7-M. You've really got to taste them yourself, however, to find a favorite. Cheers, -Dana

If the JJ's are not GT labelled then they cannot be a #5 rating. GT ratings only apply to tubes that go through the GT process which is not a static process as others but a dynamic process over the tube's entire operating range.
