So I thought it was time for a change. I just ordered a NOS Jan Phillips 5AR4 (mislabeled as 5V4GA). Anyone ever use one in a Maz 38?? Just checkin' to see if I'm totally off base on this one.......

Have one in my Route 66 and it made a big difference when compared to the stock Sovtek or a JJ GZ34.

Are you sure it's mislabeled or is that what the seller on Evil-bay said ?? I don't think a 5V4GA is the proper replacement for the 5AR4/GZ34 and may cause damage if these are not the right tubes....caution !!

Ditto. Popped one in my Jr after abusing tele62/Curt's Jr last month. Didn't make as much of an impact as I thought it would (had already changed out the Rec tube from the Sovtek prior to the Jan Phillips). But, the JP definately makes the amp more responsive and not as stiff. Works with the player a bit more. Dw

I put one in my Maz 38 on Friday and tried it at rehearsal on Sunday. It changed the amp quite a bit. Now, I'm not sure if I like the change. Got one coming for my Maz 18, should be here tomorrow.
I going to go the other direction and try a solid state rectifier shortly, just to see which way I want to go.
I also used changed V1 and V5 with a 5751 which took some of the brightness away. I like that alot.

I am thinking about replacing my stocked recs in my StingRay and SRZ65 or Maz38 Sr Rev with the NOS JAN Phillips/Sylvania .That should make a difference.

I liked it in the Jr but prefer the JP mismarked rec in that amp. Rec's are a fun, inexpensive way to tweak, experiment with amps.I too have stuck some oldie 5751's in V1 & V2 of my Jr and yes it smoothed it out, but I put the stock ECC83's back in after the rec swap..sounds killer now ;D

I got the mislabled rectifier in the Maz 18, and it sounds nice. I also moved the 5751 to V2 instead of V5. I have to wait and listen first. tele62, I just might end up going in your direction. I'll keep you posted. new

There are a few dirty dogs on evil-bay but I have had good luck so far . I think most NOS rectifiers put out more juice than the modern ones .

The amp will be stronger, tighter, and have more wattage. It is a very good upgrade over the stock rectifier.

Just a quick update on the rectifier change. Using that NOS JAN Phillips 5AR4 tube as a rectifier really made a noticeable difference. It was expensive, but well worth it. Hats off to the service at KCA tubes! The amp is tighter and the tones sound more "full".
I may now move from a JJ ECC83s in the V1 to a 5751 to tame it a bit--although my tele sounds pretty sweet the way it is!!! (not to mention my wife is raising her eyebrows at the tube acquisitions....)
Thanks for all the help and advice.....

You can never have enough tubes and it's always a good idea to check with old TV/radio repair businesses that might have NOS tubes . I've found a couple good deals that way as most don't usually know the demand/price of NOS and are usually happy to get rid of them at a good price ! You will find these at flea markets , yard sales and ham fests sometimes too . It's a crap shoot if they are good tubes but if the price is right it's usually worth taking the chance and usually a good investment that will probably keep going up in value as stock disappears
