I have a Sovtek "SSR" (so marked). I was wondering if there is any issue using it in any of my Zs. I have a Maz 18 NR, a Ghia and an Rx (old style).
Thanks! -Phil

Hello fellow Houstonite !
I run/have run a SS rec in several Z's with great success, I like what it does to the attack and the bottom end. I have one in my Jr NR right now.
Later, Curt

Hi Myles, I assume Michael Burkes is using a Groove Tubes SS rectifier? I have one and was thinking of using it in my Maz 18. I blew a rectifier tube and since I don't crank the amp for overdrive, was thinking the SS rectifier wouldn't change the sound much, maybe a little tighter on the lows, but it would be more reliable.
How much plate voltage drop will there be with the GT 5AR4 SS rectifier?
Thanks

I do not remember what they are and they might be GT or might not. There really is no difference as they all use the same 4007 diodes in the same way to get to the same place. So .... they are all just as nice as each other. I have even taken tube bases at times and just quickly wired up my own in a pinch. Not as pretty but work exactly the same.

Well, not being sure about the Sovtek I have, I got some Weber Copper Caps because I have read on this forum (and others) that they are safe and dependable. I got a WZ34 and a WY3GT. I thought I would use the 34 in either my Maz 18 or my Rx, and the WY3 in my Ghia. Since there is no warmup time on these, is it safe to use in the Ghia without a standby switch?
Thanks! -Phil

Thanks! -Phil It's ok to use them even with no warmup (though I thought that CCs DID warm up slowly) but the power tubes won't last as long. Those Copper Caps simulate tube rectifiers and lower the plate voltage so they won't have the same effect that your Sovtek SS Rectifier had. On the other hand, blindly plugging Solid State rectifiers into amps can cause problems. At the very least, the amp will require rebiasing. If not, or in some amps that are self biasing, you will be running the power tubes significantly hotter and shorten their life.
