Could anybody please tell me about purchasing tube testers? I would like to have one, but the only thing I remember is my father going to test the tubes at a electronics store for our TV when I was a kid. I see them on tube sites for $450, and on eBay for $9.95 and up. Thanks in advance for your help.

for general use, emission type tester should be fine. you'd be able to sort out the good and bad tubes. if you are gonna go a little more, you might want to look in to those that test transconductance. either way, you'll have to make sure your tester is calibrated. and also remember that these old testers don't put enough plate voltage on tubes.
i've been using B&K's 747, which is a transconductance tester. this tester is a solidstate unit, so i don't have to worry about swapping the tubes in the tester itself. the calibration procedure for it is straight forward as well.
for modern alternatives, there are testers from VTV and MaxiMatcher. i looked into getting them a few months ago but i couldn't allocate the funds for them.
there should be some more info over at UV.net.
