Yes Nathan, 1 robb started this thread 2 I responed to your question with "Ask Myles Rose, in the expert section about ordering from Groove Tubes, he can advise you on what to put in your amp." 3 you accepted a belief about the GT number rating system, and are suffering from cognitive dissonance in light of your misunderstanding. or, you made another assumtion and were wrong, and now you have wasted money on the wrong tubes, and may have caused some wear or damage to the amp. Your situation does suck. it does kinda suck. extra points for finding a way to use cognitive dissonance in a sentence...... ;D

The tubes wouldn't be that far off as to cause damage to the amp, no way! Until Groove Tubes started the numbering and matching system we always bought random quads of tubes for our big Fenders, Ampegs, Sunn, Marshall and other amps. They might not have sounded 100% but not bad, and I never heard of an amp being hurt. I think EL84s do change rather quickly from fabulous to very good and stay there for a long while before degrading enough to obviously notice. Sorry nathan38, but you came on too strong and owe Myles and Foxx an apology. If Myles said anything negative to you it's because of what he rightfully perceived as negativity sarcasm from you and responded in kind. Are you the guy that was saying in another thread recently about "everyone" hating Groove Tubes? (I just checked and you were that guy) At that time I responded that I'd never heard that before. If that was you then you're bearing some grudge already and you're looking for trouble. Remember you get more flies with honey than vinegar. We may be seeing a whole lot less of you more often at the rate you're going.

it was this thread that I was saying that most people I know hate groove tubes.....they do, most people I know around town have stopped buying them......just for the fact that they are groove tubes.
I've also said I've been using they're stuff for years and have about 300 bucks worth of used unmatched quads sitting in a suit case for emergency spares....I don't throw anything out for some reason.
came on strong....mabe....but I was just a litle irked at the matching thing and then to have myles avoid my question for a week and a half......and then get berated......and then told I should appologise......I think what pissed me off the most is when he said..."you're quite welcome".
At the minimum I was expecting an answer to my questions.....the most, a free quad of power tubes for dumping so much cash on mismatched tubes........instead I a got hissy fit from the GT rep.

I think we can safely assume that Myles said "you're most welcome" because from what you said he assumed he'd answered a question and you were thanking him. Sarcasm just does not work on forums.

Nathan did not cause any wear or damage to his amp. The differences are slight between the upper and lower boundaries of a given rating and in fact so slight that in a grid biased amp the bias would change only 1-2mA. Many folks do not even match or rate EL84 tubes. Mesa Boogie ... look at their octal based tubes. There are six ratings which are red-orange-green-gray-blue-white. Now look at their EL84 tubes. There are no ratings at all. Mesa does not match or rate their EL84 tubes. Nathan may have also gotten two duets that are probably NOT at the edges of a given rating. I would not be concerned. +/- 20% is considered an industry matched set. GT is withing 1-3mA typically which is less than 10% if tested statically. If tested dynamically over the operating range you will see the two curves lie on each other perfectly. Fine tuning an amp is like fine tuning a car. The weakest link in the chain is one issue but other issues are each and every component in the signal chain robbing harmonic overtones and content. That is why when I blueprint an amp for a client I use tubes of known and recorded values and check components such as resistors which are allowed to have a +/- 20% tolerance. If there is supposed to be an 820 ohm resistor in a spot in the circuit I assure it is a lot closer than +/- 20% as an example. So ... Nathan is fine. One issue here is the big turnover in music stores and lack of expertise. GT tries to educate their dealers but with hundreds of dealers globally (just Guitar Center has hundreds) but it is an uphill battle to teach everybody that two duets of a given rating is not as matched as a quad of the same rating. It could be, by accident, but not by plan.

All,
Wow, you're right, that thread really did go to the crapper, and fast too!! I hope that this kind of posting will not be a regular occurrence from any member. I doubt that it will with the over all quality of the members in this forum. Thanks to Myles, Foxx, and everyone else who approached this with a level head and did their best to help. Hopefully, we won't have anymore of these sarcastic, mean spirited posts.
Paul G.
Oh and Myles, thanks for all your help on the re-tubing of my 6545. Love that smooth drive!
