Hey all, sorry ... moved the thread from the Route 66 section to here, just remembered there's a separate "Tubes" section ... making sure I follow the proper forum etiquette ... anywho .... anyone tried the new Tung-Sol KT66 tubes? Any reviews, info or such? Looking into getting some for my Route 66. Thanks!

Will do so, I might try a pair of those Valve Art KT66 first, apparently those are tooled on the same machines they used for the G.E.C. ones and a local shop has them in stock.

The Valve Art tubes are not made on the same tooling as the GEC but are a close copy. The materials are quite a bit different but they are pretty nice tubes.

Ah, cool ... wrong info then, remember reading that somewhere ... guess I should always keep in mind what "net" stands for .... Not Entirely True ...

Got a pair of those Tung-Sol KT66 in the mail today from Tube Depot. Still waiting on my Bias Rite to plug them in and check them out, but ... they do look different then any other KT66 I've ever seen ... they almost look like a KT88, hope that's not a bad sign. I'll report back as soon as I give them a test run.

You may be unplesantly surprised.

Hhhhmmmm ... if they are not "true" KTs, why are they being marketed as ones? Did I just get hosed?
By "match on the two tubes" you mean the sticker that says the bias point? One says 25, the other one says 26 ... is that good or bad?

I don't know if Tung Sol ever made a KT66 to base a reissue on! Tung Sol is famous for their 5881. If you are 1mA apart on static match that is great. You are fine there.

Thanks for the info Myles!
Am I safe to put those Tung-Sol in the Route66? Even to check them out?
I'd hate to return them now but I don't want to risk anything with me beloved Route66.
I guess if they sound good then that's OK but from the design standpoint, would there be anything that could hurt the amp by putting those tubes in? Sorry if this is a silly question ... just being extra cautious and a bit paranoid.
Thanks.

Sorry if this is a silly question ... just being extra cautious and a bit paranoid. Thanks. If you are able to set the bias then it is fine. If not, then you need to know the millamp output at RCA book spec ... not some arbitrary number many tube sellers use based on their own plate voltage and bias. If your Route 66 has the factory bias then if the tube puts out 72mA or LESS at 250 B+ and a -14 bias (RCA / GE / Sylvania 6L6 spec) then you are fine.

Thanks Myles, as soon as my Bias-Rite arrives (still waiting ) I'll plug them in and check it out.

Will do! Thanks so much for all the info and help. One more thing ... I know B+ is the high voltage output from the power tranny, is it the same as tube plate voltage? Just re-read your post and you said: " ... if the tube puts out 72mA or LESS at 250 B+ and a -14 bias (RCA / GE / Sylvania 6L6 spec) then you are fine." Could you elaborate a bit more on that? Trying to learn as much as I can about tube amps, I do have some electrical engineering background but never messed around tube amps before ... just played them loud!
