Anyone have a lot of experience with electro-harmonix tubes? I usually use Sovtek or JJ's. I needed a 12AT7 and thought I'd give EH tubes a try. I examined the tube before I put it into my mazjr and it was fine. I put it in and immediatly get problems with my reverb. I pull out the driver(EH) and mixer(Sovtek) and the EH 12AT7's glass is cracked and and the top was cloudy (tube was blown). It wasn't cracked when I put it in, and it went into the socket smooth and easy. Was this just a bum tube that cracked when I turned on the power or are these tubes extra delicate?

The EH tubes are no more delicate than any other tube. The getter turning white means the vacuum was lost. If it was not this way when you got the tube you probably did something whether you knew it or not. If you tried to straighten the pins for example before installing the tube and used your fingers or a small needle nose this puts hairline stress cracks around the pins and can lead to breakage. Always use a proper tube pin straightener. All my clients have these as I give them to them. www.groovetubes.com/product.cfm?Product_ID=1642

Many electronics surplus stores have them. GT also sells them but they are out of the 9 pin only model and only have the 7 and 9 pin model at the moment. I have given out a lot of the 9 pin models to many of the folks in here. Usually when I work with somebody I have a half a dozen or so in my toolbox that I give out. The last ones I had went to Lou Toomey, Tony King (Brooks & Dunn) and Scott Patton (Sugarland) last week. They are normally in this area of the website over at GT: www.groovetubes.com/groovetoys.cfm?Category_ID=30

Like many things these days, you can sometimes find them on eBay: cgi.ebay.com/VACUUM-TUBE-PIN-STRAIGHTENER_W0QQitemZ160042666612US$10, delivered. Good luck! -Dana
