Myles, I see where there is an Electro-Harmonix EF86 and a TungSol Gold Pin EF806 now being offered for sale. Have you tested either of these? Are they the real deal ? Thanks.

I have not tested these yet. If you want to speed up the process write an email to ops@groovetubes.com which is GT's General Manager Steve Good. Maybe have a few friends write him too and tell him to get some samples for me to test as you think that GT needs to carry a decent EF-86 again. Generally as soon as he gets these in he tosses them on my desk for an evaluation. As soon as I test them I will publish the results whether GT wants to offer them or not.

Thanks Myles, I'll do that.
For those that are interested, Tube Depot in Memphis has them listed on their website. There are probably other places where you can buy them in small quantities, but that was the place someone pointed me to. They have some nice close-up photos of them as well.

I just talked to Steve Good, the General Manager at GT. We will be ordering a bunch of each of the EF86EH and their Tung Sol EF806 Gold pin.
From the photos, these are brand new designs and not copies of older tubes.
They are nothing at all like the older Sovtek or Svetlana EF86.
I will be testing both of these and will post the test results, probably in a few weeks.
Leave it to Mike Matthews .... even while in the middle of all sorts of political issues with the Russian and the workload this must have placed on the Sovtek and Electro Harmonix organization, the quality of his products never faultered and he STILL had time to continue the development of more new tubes including these new EF86 variants.
My hat is off to the man along with my thanks.

This is great news. I hope both of them look like viable current production offerings. I can't wait to hear your take on them.
I also spoke with Bob Pletka of Eurotubes about the elusive JJ EF806S. He said Jamona's been working on it for two years, and Bob won't allow them to release it until he's convinced its tone and quality is top shelf. It sounded like quality and reliability were particularly a concern for him....

I too think its really cool watching to see if the golden age of tubes, so to speak, can be somewhat re-lived, if not in quantity, in quality!! I totaly welcome ANY advancement towards that direction. I realize that future and currently being produced amps that use that tube will benifit greatly from a cheap, readily availible, and quality version, But i gotta say that for the EF amps that i already own or ever will for that matter, with a pretty small investment little by little, over a period of time, ive accumulated a nice little stash of Nos 86's. In fact more than i will probably ever use, ( i think they last a long time ). For those of us that own one of these amps right now, There seems to still be a lot of reasonably priced nos EF's out there. ................ For now. Course on second thought, i wouldnt sneeze at a $15 one that sounded like a mullard!

One is www.tubedepot.com

Sorry, Miles...but forgive me here.... ...I am not seeing any JJ EF806S's at Tube Depot, or anywhere else for that matter. My comment from Bob was in reference to the JJ EF806S, not to the New Sensor offerings. I asked him about the rumors I'd heard of JJ releasing an EF86, and he mentioned that it has in fact been on the drawing board for 2 years, but it hasn't been released due to the reasons mentioned in my previous post.

Correct .... it is the Sovtek / Tung Sol EF806 - store.tubedepot.com/ts-ef806.htmland the store.tubedepot.com/eh-ef86.htmlThe JJ is still in the waiting wings. Now if you want to go totally over the top from these folks: store.tubedepot.com/pa-z729.htmlI guess it will be nice that there are more choices.

Myles, What we have here is failure to communicate.. "The JJ is still in the waiting wings."That was mikek's point in his first posting - then you questioned what Bob at JJ had to do with anything. mikek tried to clarify, but alas - it was not to be.. As long as everyone understands what they're talking about - which I think we all do - all is well.

Heh, so it goes. I suppose if there was a misunderstanding, its my fault since I wasn't clear enough in the first place.
Yeah, in a nutshell I was alluding to the fact/rumor we may have another EF86 option (JJ) coming down the pipeline, but it might be a while.
In any case, back to the subject - I'm curious to hear how the New Sensor EF86's turn out. It'd be great to have some current options...but then again a great NOS EF86 is just a few dollars more than the Tung-Sol....
