My z-28 was a little too quiet at our last gig. It sounded fine for rhythm but my solo boost didn't cut through like normal. I know it sounded fine for the audience but I couldn't hear myself. Was using a Chinese greenback and wgs reaper.
My 2x12 was closed back, and definitely far enough away from me that it wasn't just projecting at my knees. I'm wondering if switching to openback would make it feel louder on stage. Anyone have thoughts on that? Might need to go with louder speakers..... Maybe this is the time to put my blue or retro 30 in there to get higher Dbs.
Thx,
Brian

Chinese Greenbacks are notoriously "quiet"; on the other hand, the Retro 30 you mentioned is one of WGS's louder speakers (according to their published specs). That might be the first swap I'd try.
If you're feeling frisky, you could always throw 2 Eminence Wizards in there--those are wicked loud, and kinda need to be in a closed-back anyway. They're a G12H-30 variant.

I have an open back 2x12 for sale in the BST thread if you decide to go that route...creambacks or blues available (blues are LOUD).

I've tried closed back cabs in the past, but no matter what speaker or configuration, I just couldn't hear myself on the bandstand unless I was right in front of the cabinet and it was angled up at me. This may be because I grew up on a blackface Fender Vibrolux Reverb, but I find an opened back cabinet or combo gives me a much better perspective of where I am on the bandstand hearing-wise, which, at least for me, has always overridden whatever is coming through the monitors. It seems like an open backed cab gives me sort of "surround sound."

I use an avatar 2x12 open backed cabinet with a weber silver bell and a weber blue dog and it works great, sound flows all around and is very nice and open

Eminence Private Jack is supposed to be a louder "greenback" I used to have a z28 1-1/2 combo and really liked it

Thanks for all of the replies! Got a bunch of good ideas here, I should have mentioned that I previously pulled the retro 30 for the greenback because the retro 30 was too loud and I had the amp on bedroom settings and it was too loud for the sound guy. I'm gonna keep tweaking the setup, been through a couple of variations already. Might even spring for those private jacks, but not until trying it open back with the current speakers and closed with the retro instead of the greenback. If you're wondering if I wish I would have gone with a 1x12 just to limit the options, the answer is yes . Sure does sound good with the greenback/reaper combo right now though

Although I do need to add a 2x12 for the Dote'.
